Just fight whatever monsters you fight right now, yeah it takes a while to level gems.

" Not necessarily. I believe skill gems gain a static % of the xp you gain, so long as they are socketed in a piece of gear you are actively wearing (and getting the benefits of, you can't put on a piece of gear, put a gem in it, then trade out a second piece of gear that removes some stat like str, making your first piece of gear unusable and still level the gem, as for all intents and purposes the first piece of gear is no longer being 'worn'. It may be on your char sheet, but only because they don't auto-remove stuff you can't wear any longer.) So if you can play cruel difficulty and gain xp faster by doing so than by playing normal, it will level your gem faster. If you can blow through content in normal and gain more xp/hour than playing cruel, normal will level the gem faster. You shouldn't worry, the gem will quickly run through the first few levels very fast.
Leveling a new gem doesn't take long when you're fighting higher level mobs since (it's been my experience anyway) the gem is accruing experience in much the same way your character is, so a level 1 gem in a level 50 area say, levels up very very quickly indeed. |

" Eh, the level of the gem itself isn't affecting how much xp it is gaining as it is always gaining a static % of your xp gain. But yes, level 50 areas tend to give high amounts of xp and lower level gems do take small amounts to level so as long as the player can run a level 50 area efficiently, the gem will level up quickly. Equipped gems received 10% of the xp that you do. So, the higher level enemies you fight the faster your gems will level because higher level enemies give more xp.

" Well, there's a curve to that. If you fight enemies that are too high and can't kill them or can't kill them efficiently, then it may not level the gem faster. Say you have a level 50 enemy that gives you 10,000 xp when you kill it (note: all numbers pulled directly from my anus for demonstration purposes only) or you have a level 40 enemy that gives you 8,000 xp when you kill it. Sure, per kill the level 50 is better, but what happens if you die 25% of the time against the level 50 enemy and the times you can kill it the time involved is 5 minutes, whereas you have to go AFK to die to the level 40 enemy and can kill one of them in 1 minute. Thus, in 5 minutes of killing the level 40 enemies you have killed 5 of them and gained 40,000 xp, or four times more than trying to kill the level 50 enemy.
