Idea for the FFA loot system
" What you think about making FFA loot in cut-throat league, perhaps with some slightly better drop chances and everybody gets his own loot in default league? I agree that FFA loot has a place in the game, but I believe that's the cut-throat league, where players can... let's say act accordingly if they are not happy with the loot grabbing going on. In default league I think it just discourages playing with strangers or even with friends. |

" Individual loot is simply the timed allocation system with an infinite timer. The advent of individual loot was a terrible idea. A far better solution is to simply make the allocation timer longer, but not infinite. This solves two major issues I see with individual loot: 1) other players can see your drops and request them if they need them or offer a trade. 2) it maintains one world congruency, which I feel is important to any game If the timer is sufficiently long, then players can pick and choose their loot while in a non-competitive league, without fear that someone will gank it during combat. They are also free to leave loot on the ground that they do not want, and others that do want it have the option of taking it, which is impossible in an individualized loot system. " Individual loot is something different than "the timed allocation system with an infinite timer." Concerning the two issues you see: 1) If you are in a communicating group - and by the way that is what many pro-FFA-loot guys say, that they are - than I guess if a good item drops, you will offer it to your teammates? 2) You really think just because everybody sees and gets his own loot that breaks the immersion? But the random timer that screams "THIS IS YOUR LOOT FOR ANOTHER 3 SECONDS" is totally cool? Uhm... Point is that in a FFA-loot world you will always encounter people that will take their loot (given by the timer), even if their character doesn't need it, because their "other character needs this badly". Now you will probably say something like "dont play with this guy", yeah well that's the problem... people won't really look forward playing with strangers. I don't know the timer just feels weird.. it's like you have to role a dice for loot and then you have to do another role to get it? Sorry but for me this is kind of a easy decision.. I don't see any real disadvantage with individual loot that isn't outweighed by far.. |

This is pointless.

Apparently.
Would seem to me instanced loot = single player game more than anything else. BTW, when I'm with a bow user, I won't even look at bows on the ground, even if they dropped in my name. Cause I'm not using them. I also laugh at the fool who fills up his stash and can't grab anything else when it drops cause he was too greedy in the first place. |

With all due respect Slayer, you guys are in the very top of the ladder. The way you guys play is not to be ignored but it does not reflect how the vast majority of players are playing. Your opinion is as valid is anyone eles' but I would urge you to consider the big picture & how it impacts every stage of the game rather than just the top20 meta game.

" I would say this statement is accurate from everything I have seen playing characters of all levels in HC public. Extending the timers just slows the pace - I play a range build now and I have no problem getting orbs that drop for me a screen away. |

Still no reason we can't have looting options. Why the hell are people arguing over which is better between FFA and instanced? There is no right answer people. You can never please everyone. Just put both in and be done with it. Its not that hard.

If adding looting options is that hard and time-consuming, then just making timers longer would be the best solution. And as someone already said here, better with an option to remove the timer quickly by right-clicking on it. The party killed all nearby mobs, I see some rare item with my name which I don't need, and I see another player who needs it standing waiting for it, then I right-click it, he takes and we both run further. Quick and fast. Slowing down no more than killing another monster.
And to those who always say, "if you hate ninja looting, change the party", "make your own party", "play with friends only" etc. - there're not so many parties currently, especially in Legacy League, especially at that time when New Zealand and Asia usually play while America and Europe is still sleeping or at work. So usually leaving party means playing solo or not playing at all. Btw, now we all know and expect that when open beta is released all our stuff (with some few exceptions) will be wiped, so it's not that sad if ninjas loot precious and valuable items all the time, hell it's just testing, not about stuff. Imagine what happens after release, losing good stuff would be much much more frustrating and making angry even for experienced players. We see forum now with close beta testers' comments only, add to that the whole wave of complaints from new-comers. And human nature is such that many people who will lose nice stuff will not blame themselves, not ninjas, not bad internet, they will blame the game, the system and developers. And that's sad. |

In response to iamstryker
To save space I'm not quoting all of that. 1: What I mean by "entitlement" is that you feel that if you didn't get there in time, you should not be "penalized". Why should someone else be penalized for picking up loot for your failure to get to it in time? If everyone on the screen is killing monsters, and an item pops up while doing so are we supposed to wait till its over and "claim" items that may or may not have been yours or mine? 2: Care bear is a simple term to refer to a system that holds your hand. For now on I will refer to a "Care bear" system as "system that holds your hand and doesn't let bad things happen". Sorry to tread on your heels. Also, nice job not responding to the actual point of that sentence. Since that post I do see some suggestions that could work but might be hard to code in. 3: I actually don't understand your point on this. You're not being penalized because you didn't get to the drop in time. Its a game mechanic that promotes team work and trust. If someone "ninjas" "your" item because you didn't get there in time, tough luck? 4: Yea its a serious suggestion, I don't see why you don't think it is. If your not contributing your dead weight. Unless your just using them for boosting. Also organization is a good thing. I guess your parties don't communicate though. On the issue though, after thinking about it, the ability to turn on and off private loot would probably eliminate all of the complaints. It would likely have to be a setting when making a party though. Edit: Didn't see your last post, I completely agree with putting both in some how.
