Hmmm... wouldn't it theoretically be also possible for uniques to drop that way? I mean, the chance would be incredibly low, but is it possible in the first place?

Yes it works. You can chance elder/shaper bases and get their relative unique.
No uniques don't drop as elder or shaper.  |

I would assume it works since there are shaper/elder uniques of regular uniques.
