Ring damage mods effect spells?

If a ring says +x physical or cold or lightning damage, does this work with my spells (particularly ice spear) or with only melee attacks?

No it doesn't only mod that have global effect like spell dmg%, cold dmg%, global crit %, spell speed% effects spell.
If you want +x elemental dmg you have to link the spell gem with a support gem that gives +x ele damage ign: Ederheart
