" No, it was ugly for its time. The use of those hideous sprites was just an awful choice. The day D2 came out it was ugly graphically. To me D2 was fundamentally flawed and set the genre back years. It is the culprit for going towards an RPG instead of a Rogue like. It is at fault for the horrible idea of playing the same content over and over as the base gameplay. Current D3 is a better game than D2 was even if they really messed up the loot system and made it way too easy. The one thing that saved D2 was the mods. If you played with some of the better mods out there the game was so much better than what they actually released. Последняя редакция: EnderCN#1614. Время: 31 янв. 2016 г., 09:20:09

D2 was built with passion as was Path of Exile. That's all that matters.

" It's funny that you mention J.R.R. Tolkien, I remember reading an article in one of my old Game Informer mags about this very topic. One of the D2 devs (can't remember which) said that his 2 biggest influences for D2 was Lord of the Rings (book) and Rogue (game). I also find it very interesting that Tolkein was part of a small group of Oxford intellects called the "Inklings". There were various members over the years, but the four keystone members were J.R.R. Tolkien, C.S. Lewis (Chronicles of Narnia), Charles Williams (Descent into Hell), and Owen Barfield. They would meet once a week, and encouraged the writing of fantasy. So what's the point right? Well that last guy I mentioned, Barfield, was known as the most influential of the group. He was known as "the first and last Inkling"- he died in 1997 at the age of 99. His book "Poetic Dictation" had a profound influence on both Lewis and Tolkien and inspired much of their fantasy writing. One notable poem from the book is titled "The Song They Sing"- below is the first stanza: Siren, Siren Worm! Clearer yearly floats the hymn you sing Over angry waters, heartening.

If PoE could manage to make the transitions between acts/difficulties more interesting it would go a long way in it's favor. In D2, the first areas in the new acts were typically more interesting than the first areas in PoE. Even in Act I, moving up to Hell difficulty (our Merciless) was a transition that caused people to pause and re-think their approach.
In PoE, we still have the problem of anyone who makes it through Cruel Act IV will breeze through Act I and Act II of Merciless. There should be a significant upturn in difficulty moving from Cruel to Merciless... not a fall back. |

OP should rephrase: "I have to say it...POE is better than a 16 year old game"
a game that was ahead of its time...just like PoE is..with its poor performance in 4+ parties and long-ass loading times, but I believe there is still time to improve that. |

" POE isn't what you call ahead of its time. POE is a good game but it copied lots of concepts from its predecessors. They took existing concepts and improve upon it. It isn't really innovative, but rather it is nostalgic and old school. |

" Wrong. The talenttree is nothing but a stattree. Skills are gems and having to level each skill is a copy from the materia system. It's executed in a really poor way hiding gems behind drops/relevels and so on. In FF7 you could obtain all Materia but a few exceptions such Knights of the Round and Master Summon without much effort. " Gold was useful in the classic D2, where uniques and sets were limited to basic items and rares were exceptional. You gambled a lot of equipment because the equipment could reach higher levels than Diablodrops. While Orbs are creative they created the traderipoffs see Mirror/Eternalthreads. The eternal was used in such an uninteded way that it got removed. " No there are several reasons Path of Exile crafting is inferior to other crafting. D2 crafting was reliable it didn't take much effort to craft ie 3 chips+ sword = 3 socket sword + magic sword. There is no reliable way to obtain higher crafting currency because GGG destroyed the Chaos/Alch receipes in CB/OB to yield chance orbs and lower currency is hidden behind a lot of grinding. And even then the mods are hidden behind another RNG layer instead of spamming mods and make them equal chance on all tiers the highest tier requires a lot of currency to be rolled. D2 rolled Affixes with equal chances. Runes were a LoD addition. The initial runebased crafting wasn't that simple because it required rules Shael to Lem and it was totally broken. The later crafting was much simpler though. 1.10+ runewords were the death to D2. " While it's true you have to think that BLizzard North has been disbanded. Content additions are a common way to keep a dying MMORPG alive though. " The early game feels entirely boring. And if you lack links you are screwed. There are more issues with combat that kill excitement. D2 combat was excellent because it was kept simple. Blizzard added more complicated mechanics into the gamefiles without adding them to the final game such as Day/Nightcicle power. Path of Exile is confusing a lot of players especially trial and error doesn't work because the tooltip show supportgems on gems where they don't work at all, that's why people just copy and paste builds. " Absolute amount of cheaters yes, relative amount before 2003(they stopped caring after that and that's the time D2 cheaters increased to 99,9%) questionable because why would GGG not ban those 1.2k cheaters and suddenly make QOL a high priority? Also why is the cheatdetection only activated during 1 month races? Harder to Scam? Are you kidding if name+shame would be allowed the forums would break. D2 only had Droptrade scams(Anni+Gheeds) and Tradehacks which got fixed. And those got banned. Now show me the Nigerian Princes of Path of Exile getting banned? Well they disabled short allocation only after a massive shitstorm. Later they added "map to opener" because there were still people pissed that higher mapdrops got stolen. |

Proves that we all see pretty much what we want to see. Different people can look at exactly the same thing and come away with completely different interpretations.
Hilbert doesn't like PoE, so he sees the negatives. That's human nature. That's why we shouldn't be trying to assign "better" or "worse" to something with no objective measure. All we do is end up arguing as to who is right, when neither side is right or wrong. |
