Its a fantastic game for its time and yes it is a bit unfair to compare it with a 15 year younger game.
The reason I did was because people constantly keep saying how great D2 was. And how no game has come close to it.
While infact PoE is the closest thing we have to a new Diablo game. With alot of improvements D2 lacked.


2. Yeah its definatly a more niche game. None is aguing over what game sold the best. In that case Vanilla D3 wins, still its generally seen as the worst game in the series.
Blizzard is a giant in the industry and been around since the early 90s. D3 was buildt for a mainstream audiance, so it isn't strange it sold well.
Still PoE came from nowhere and is now seen as one of the best ARPGs out there.
For me PoE is the real sequel to Diablo 2. While D3 is a more casual game, that doesn't feel like a Diablo game.

If we are talking about a popularity contest. Diablo 2> POE. Diablo 2 have mass appeal, that what make it great. It is fun and enjoyable. Many people played it back in the days. POE is bipolar, people like it or hate it.

If we are talking about game quality. Diablo 2 is an impressive game of its era. POE isn't. Standard went pass that. It is a good game, however it can't be compared to many great games out there of this era. Does it have greatest storyline, excellent graphic, impressive soundtrack, engaging and enjoyable gameplay? If I have to be a great critic, I would say POE isn't what people here make it out to be. When you put other great game titles and compare it side by side, you would think POE is pale in comparison.

Diablo 2 was a "near" perfect game for this era, and also he had a funny pvp, balanced leveling (the expansion), great music, nice builds too.

But it has 2 big problems:

1- Graphic is not widescreen and out of date
2- After 3 months you don't log in, you lose all the chars. that was the main reason I stopped to play it.

Without these two, maybe I still could to play it.

PoE has something better, but also something very bad like legacy system that kills any fair PvP and fairness in general. Heavy RNG based items that kill any wish to craft, and few people monopolyze all the market.

PoE is potentially better than D2, but far from his level instead.

Overall if we consider each separate eras,

I would to give 8,5 do D2, and 6,5 to PoE (7,5 removing legacies), maybe 3 to D3. :)

well no, pve is much harder in poe than in diablo2 but of course in diablo2 you lost your character if you died in hardcore and other players could kill you as well and that was a huge threat

but the drop rates were monstrously bad in diablo2, people didn't realize that because of duping

brings PoE to D2's level at the very minimum. Dried lake in particular is why I do not listen to other music while playing PoE.

It's quite typical. Diablo virtually created this genre and everything came after that including PoE are just copycats that wants a piece of the pie.

GGG said the reason they made PoE in the first place because they want to recreate Diablo 2 but with their own formula not blizzards. In a sense D2 is PoE's big DADDY... just like D2 is the big DADDY for all other games that came and tried to share his piece of pie.

When your game is niche you get a sense of security or confidence or ect ect when someone gives you a seal of approval when compared to the mainstream... or the king/god w/e in that respective category.

Niche MMOs compare themselves to WoW.
Niche MOBA games compare themselves to DOTA or LoL
Niche Online FPS games compare to Counter Strike/BF/CoD
and ofc niche ARPG compare themselves to Diablo

ect ect you get the point.

D2 and PoE is really not comparable. But if they were from the same era, it will be pretty ignorant to say PoE was better.

Then again what's better? Financial success? Gameplays? Hardcoreness? How stupid low the droprates are? How easily a box can lag-rip you?

PoE can be compare to D3, D3 is clearly many many times superior than PoE financially. No matter how much D3 QQ and trashtalks us POErs put out will not have any impact nor power to stop Blizzard from selling millions of D3 copies every single expansion packs... and if all D3 players spit at us we would probably drown in the ocean of spits...

Luckily D3 players are not nearly as aggressive and hateful compare to us PoE dudes so we should be safe.

But clearly D3 is not better than PoE in other respect... but I dont know why people still wants to do the comparison... you can go to D3 forum and post the same "I have to say it...PoE is better then Diablo 3" and you will get different response.

That being said last time I posted PoE > D3 on D3 forum only like 12 people replied and they were mostly PoE players... Its like D3 players didn't even realize PoE exists and/or simply don't give a fuck about PoE. While on PoE forum PoE vs D3 will result in countless of bickering trashtalking whiteknighting forum account banning and suspension... which is hilarious as fuck for me. To see how 2 communities respond to the same argument completely differently. (One side just ignores it no fucks given, the other side acts like someone just kick their dogs and touched their wives).
