GGG= Blizzard north??

Roper worked in a lead role for the Marvel Franchise games created over at Disney Interactive for quite some time before being promoted to Vise President / General Manager at Core Games. That group released a bunch of titles.

He's now Chief Creative Officer over at Improbable atm, unless that's changed.

The original D2 / Condor devs created a working version of D3, but upon being "inspected" by "the $uits" at the increasingly profit orientated "Blizzard $outh" they decided that the D3 created by Condor / Blizzard North was not what they wanted to release. In it's, back then, rendition.

Blizzard North / Condor basically disputed the proposed changes because they just knew it was bullshit. They did not want to tarnish what was "Diablo". They refused and basically, single file, handed in their resignations. At least, most of them.

Thus, we have the steaming pile of shit that was Diablo 3, as it was released under Jay Wil$on's helm. But it wasn't really Jay's fault. He and everyone left (Blizzard $outh) working on the title were being fed corporate bullshit guidelines. No backbone. It's also the main reason D3 took 10 years. The original creation was $crapped.

From my understanding, many of the original iconic Condor team reformed under Flagship Studios to create Hellgate: London and Mythos. Unfortunately, the team was too used to working with unlimited budget. They carried on and created an incredibly ambitious game with Hellgate: London. Right down to attempting to support the game in a multitude of languages they could not fund.

HG:L would have been a masterpiece, but they simply ran out of funding. I believe at one point Brevik and Roper were paying employee's at Flagship out of their own wallets in a last ditch effort to pull it all together. Alas, it was not to be.

"Blizzard $outh" and the corporate bull$hit of the world are to blame for destroying what was one of the best gaming studio's of all time. If CEO's would have just fed Blizzard North / Condor money and let them do work... If only.....

At least, that's my take on the "non sugar coated" version of the story.

In a sense, Condor / Blizzard North is and are solely responsible for the classic ARPG genre.
It's a DEFINITIVE FUCKING TRAVESTY what happened to that studio.
(That's NOT to say Path of Exile hasn't earned the title of: BEST ARPG OF ALL TIME).

GGG IS, in essence, the next best thing to Condor / Blizzard North. We are lucky that GGG had some "very rich friends" and a community still starving from the "once great" Diablo franchise; that they were able to publish on their own terms. Fortunate that they didn't have to parlay their "baby" into corporate corruption.

At least not entirely...

Why do you think Brevik is an "adviser" for Path of Exile in fucking "CHINA"?

Who the hell would be better suited?

for the record, I agree. D3 is a great game, and would have been better received had it be an original IP. But in packaging it as a Diablo game, it came with a lot of expectations Blizzivision had no intention of meeting. But this is all well-trodden roadwork now.

Short and long of it: GGG =/= Blizzard North, if only because they've resisted the golden handcuffs that eventually killed Blizzard North altogether...so far.

I was a D2 dev at Blizzard North. To the best of my knowledge no one from the D2 team moved to new zealand to join GGG. Not that I've kept up with absolutely everyone (core d2 team was about 50 people, and the extended team at blizzard who were involved in some non-trivial way was about 200), but they certainly didn't hire a lot of D2 devs.

That's not quite true. There were at least two people with meaningful roles on d2 that Blizzard South recruited down to Socal, and they have credits on D3.

My favorite companies (Paradox, GGG, Blizzard) all went to crap when devs became greedy. When game is no longer about play experience, but about mechanics to hook up people (loot boxes, "hype", press conferences) it quickly becomes shit. Popular shit. But instead of shit that last years, it's fast food shit. It's like restaurant dish vs kebab or mcdonalds food. It's like prostitute (hehe) vs faithful girlfriend.
It's like 1950's america vs corporate capitalism. All things, empires, ideas, religions become corrupted and die. Too bad, this growth is too accelerated.

Bill Roper is VP at Disney. Marvel Heroes is one of his, and he has Disney Infinity cred too. He's happy there and still enjoying life.
