I'm willing to bet there'll be an RNG challenge like complete all possible chambers of the ziggurat or smth. Maybe it won't be the carto one, but it's a likely candidate.

If i understand correctly how it functions, then another very probable candidate would be that you need something like

"cartographers room tier III"

Get it? Rng upon RNG upon RNG to get that and then drop a few red maps.

And then the challenge will be "complete a tier 3 carto room in your temple 10x"

:')

All just speculation and it doesn't appear to have a tier but maybe that only appears when you go to lvl 2 of a room?

Now that would qualify as "pure evil shit". They'll probably do it.

Well upon watching some other video material after i typed this i actually noticed a II in the cartographers room.

So my hunch is most likely correct that you would need a III cartographers room for red maps.(and perhaps that third upgrade only becomes available while when your altering the temple from inside red maps?)

Freedom is not worth having if it does not include the freedom to make mistakes
I wouldn't be surprised if GGG piles on the RNG for either map drops in the temple, or because of the carto rooms, they deny them from dropping at all. There's often the issue of GGG hitting upon a great idea and then they have to put the RNG in there and pile it on thick, and then it gets ruined. Hopefully that doesn't happen, but given GGG's track record and their love of repeating mistakes over and over again when it comes to RNG...my hopes aren't that high. :P
People seem to be confusing the idea of "incursion" (the past where nothing drops but keys) to the "temple" (which you clear in the present) after 11 or so incursions.

At least that's my understanding. We'll see more as we get closer to launch.
My understanding is that during the Incursion, you don't see any drops at all. Only after finishing it, everything that did drop explodes out of the altar for you to sift through. Maximum time on killing things and no time wasted on picking up things.

The new FAQ states that magic monsters and architects can drop maps in the incursions, and then of course there's the map room in the final temple.

Nothing drops DURING the incursion, but all the loot that would have dropped is rained on ya after it.
We can hope that the temple chests will drop lots of maps. End of map starvation and a real reason to buy the map stash tab (hint to GGG) would be nice.

You are correct that the 11 past temple incursions (we'll teleport to the past via GGG's version of The Wayback Machine... now all I'll need is a transmogrification mtx to look like Mr. Peabody and a Sherman pet) are for unlocking rooms and chests and we will not pick up any loot in the past. When the incursion is done and we come back to the present all that dropped in the past will spill out at our feet (better than loot pinata). Then when we get the present day temple run we'll get to run the rooms we unlocked and see if there are pinata chests.
