Righteous Fire + Zealot's Oath interaction
So Righteous Fire deals massive self-damage based on life, so stacking life by itself won't let you sustain it any longer. But what if you have Zealot's Oath, and you build your character so that max ES is many times as much as max life? That way your ES regen (converted from life regen) is based on your max ES, but presumably you're still taking fire damage according to your max life, so it's a lot more feasible to offset the damage and run RF permanently. Or does RF switch to an ES-based calculation if you have Zealot's Oath?

Yeah, pretty much what you say... ES isn't penetrated by Fire like with Chaos Damage situation. I think though there might be problem with accumulating regeneration without spending too much points on HP, on the other hand if you don't get enough HP nodes, those cobras are gonna eat you alive in all that barrage they can make (Act III, Warehouse).
What makes you sustain it is mostly a fire Resistance, which can be upped to 95% with use of flasks, taking resist passives/resist gear/max resist passives (elemental adaptation). Templar using shield has also two quite interesting passives -> +Resistance with shield, which adds +15% to all resistances. There is also Aura called Purity (+Elemental Resistance). Near Marauder starting place there are massive amounts of resist nodes (2 fire,2 shock,2 cold and 1 to ALL). And to be sure... Elemental Equilibrium isn't quite good idea with Righteous Fire, I guess... since continuous damage isn't probably counted as a single dealing damage over time. Последняя редакция: Macronne#5459. RF eats through your energy shield before hitting your life. You probably already knew that.
Energy shield will not recharge on its own while you are taking damage, which you always will when using RF. And sacrificing life means that RF does less damage. The damage RF does is based off your max life, so any attempt to replace life with ES seems like a mistake to me. Best way to sustain it longer is to get maxed fire resist (and up your max resist to at least 80%), get as much life regen nodes as you can (as a percent of total life, not the 2.6 per second ones), then have 1 or 2 ruby flasks which give an additional 10% to max fire resist. In Wraeclast, if someone tries to kill you... you just kill them right back.

I see, so Life Regeneration just speeds up ES regeneration? Zealot's Oath feels worthless then...
Thought it's gonna Regen ES. |

It will regen ES constantly; it works the same as Life Regen.
It's just not worth it :P |

You'd still have to make some judicious choices of skills and gear and get strong fire resistance, certainly. I think there are some uniques like Eye of Chayula that give reduced max life, so those would be useful. Let's say you get to 85% fire resist and have 5x as much ES as life, then you need to produce 3%/s regen to offset the burning. For instance there's 1% near the Templar that can be taken with one life node, 1.2% of life regen in the centre that can be taken without any life, and Troll's Blood can be taken without too much life along the way. (The Golem's Blood ring would be great, but it's a long way to go for a spellcaster). You'd also run Vitality aura with Inner Force, so that's another 1.5%+ regen depending on what level of it you can use. Something like this to take in plenty of life regen and ES:
http://www.pathofexile.com/passive-skill-tree/AAAAAgMAVysHY-aBEVC71jvh4venK20ZLR9MswQHHwI2xdgkpwiPRh0U-tL3wWaecU2az0NjtzFY9Z3EFkCFfSlP7Dg62E3YjHaePIFvBLMCcbiT6-4MfRB_xp4o-oLHy5jVLIqv2mKUoGh0wBpZ86yqJ-3z3Rku1I-53e8O51JUSV8_i3o= The point of running RF all the time of course is not the fire damage to nearby enemies, it's having 'more' spell damage. At high levels it's 60-odd%, so it's a very powerful boost. |

And once you face any Chaos damage with that skillplan, it's all over, sadly.

I think Righteous Fire needs some further exploration...I've been trying to make this work and definitely the main issue is that it is very gear dependent.
At the moment, I have 88% fire resistance (75% max + 5% from Saffell's Frame shield + 5% from Elemental Adaptation node + 3% from lvl17 Purity) If I use a Ruby Flask, I actually get 101% fire resistance (this is if I have Inner Force buffs). This build I'm trying on an Ice Spear critical hit Witch. I'm at very low health (running critical health for Pain Attunement, so my hp is at like 200). I got Zealot's Oath to regen my ES and with this, it can take over a full minute for my health to get down to 1. What really helps me keep it up for very long (like entire Docks merciless runs) is the Ghost Reaver passive, which converts life leech to ES. I got a 5link right now with Fireball + Ice Spear + GMP + Life Leech + Mana Leech(this will probably change). At the moment I had to sacrifice critical chance/multiplier nodes to be more tanky with my ES but once I stack the criticals, I will regain a huge amount of ES per hit. With the ES I leech with Ghost Reaver, I can complete a merciless Docks run without losing the Righteous Fire effect. And yeah, Righteous Fire isn't good because of the fire damage, it's amazing because of the +spell damage. At lvl18, Righteous Fire's multiplier is 81% on spell damage. |

Old thread but I had to add this.
It's a simple concept with righteous fire. It burns you for 100% of your max life. if you have 95% resist, that leaves 5% of your max life burning per second. This means you need +5% life regen per second to break even and take no damage from RF. Anything extra will make you gain life. Adding zealots oath will insure that you don't lose any energy shield. if you have +75% Fire resist you need +25% life regen. (impossible) 80 --> +20% 85 --> +15% 90 -- > 10 You can actually get those values fairly easy, however, lets say you took a redbeak sword and doubled your RF damage. This would double the required life regen required to stay alive per bracket. Theoretically if you had 75% resist, +4 from purity, +5 from nodes and +10 from a flask, you could reach 94% resist. (You don't want to take inner force to boost purity to 5% because it would increase the damage you take from RF as well) This would result in 5% life regen needed. If you used 2x Redbeak swords, you would need 15% life regen to break even. I'm not sure if it is possible to get 15% life regen without using springleaf shield. If it was possible... If you had 10,000 hp, you would burn your enemy for 5k damagex3(dual redbeak) so 15,000 dps. On top of that, any spell such as fire trap/EK/bear trap would do 287% more multiplitive damage. You would have probably have maxed resists. IGN: Oryas or iicycloneii or Leveiup Последняя редакция: ArionSHFL#7766. Время: 22 мар. 2013 г., 11:22:53

"first off, if someone is using zeal oath, they WON"T be taking much hp boosts but es boosts instead while still taking the %hp/sec nodes. because then the es regen will be based off es but righteous fire is still based of hp. you can have much larger es than hp. if you read to this point and wondered where damage is coming from, it is coming from the 1.9 multiplier rf gives to spells. next, redbeak doesn't work on rf, because it is DoT. but some rf builds will be in low life state which means spells (or attacks) have double damage now. last, bear trap is not spell damage.
