Custom resolution for fullscreen - possible? Yes, sort of

When playing on my laptop (not the strongest GPU), I found that I have to use a fairly low resolution to get smooth gameplay, because I absolutely *hate* jaggies and therefore cannot play without AA. Sadly, many notebook GPUs can barely handle higher resolutions without AA, no chance to get a smooth framerate at 1680 x 1050 or even 1440 x 900 with AA enabled.

Unfortunately, the low resolutions offered by PoE are all 4:3 (800x600, 1024x768 etc.) thus the game will look distorted on a widescreen display so the fix would be to have a low resolution with 16:10 (or 16:9, depending on your screen) available. However, such resolutions are not included with the default video driver settings (they don't make much sense in most cases anyway).

Setting a custom 16:10 resolution (like 1024 x 640) via production_config.ini doesn't work for fullscreen - the game will reset to the nearest supported resolution, 1024 x 768 in that case.

The reason why it doesn't work is that the video driver does not "report" this custom resolution as valid and the game won't be able to use it, but it's still possible and here is how:

Note that this may not work on all systems and video cards, depending on driver version among other things and some displays may simply refuse from using an unsupported resolution. Also, it's nvidia-only, no idea how to do this for AMD.

Note: Detailed youtube video at the end of this post.

Open the Nvidia control panel and navigate to the display resolution section. Create your custom resolution and make sure to enable it. It's usually sufficient to set the horizontal and vertical pixel values and leave everything else at default. You need to know the aspect ratio of your display and do some simple math to figure out the exact values.

Example: A 16:10 widescreen has an aspect ratio of 1.6 (typical 16:10 resolution like 1920 x 1200, divide width / height and you get the aspect ratio). Now decide about the desired new pixel width (e.g. 1024 or even 800) and divide that value by 1.6, so you get the correct height.

Now, when starting the game, the custom resolution you just created *should* be accessible from the video options and can be used like any other resolution. At least, that's how it was for me.

Known side effects: None (but standard disclaimer about messing with Windows settings always applies - if unsure, don't touch them).

A video that shows in detail how to customize display resolutions in the Nvidia control panel (not my video, but still, it shows the essentials).
