'Cold' Isn't An Element
Before modern chemistry people believed that everything was composed of four elements- air, Earth, Fire, and Water. Today we know better but we still use the ancient concept of
the 'elements' in movies and games that are based on medieval fantasy. This appears to be the intent in PoE, with the elemental damage types. However, while fire is a classic element and lightening was believed to be a combination of air and fire, there's nothing elemental about cold. Cold was only ever just a property of matter, like hot. Water is a classic element so cold water, or ice, would be a better fit, no? Some cold spells are actually called ice, like Ice Nova. Последняя редакция: TheNightFly#5386. Cold Damage is a better wording than Ice Damage imo. Cooling something down doesn't turn it to Ice.

" Yup, Ice is just frozen water. Fire and Lightning don't really make sense as elements, either. Fire is a chemical reaction, while Lightning is the conduction of electricity. Neither of those things can really be a building block of something nor can they be called the most basic examples of their kind (or is there another definition of element that I am missing?). In that sense, Cold, Fire, and Lightning are pretty much on the exact same conceptual level; some form of energy that causes harm to enemies. Need game info? " How are you so sure that the people of Wraeclast/Oriath believed the same? |

" This tbh. Even in real life there was no real consensus: the Chinese have Earth, Water, Fire, Wood and Metal, while Babylon had Sea, Earth, Sky and Wind. Why is it so hard to believe Cold is an element in Wraeclast? |

Cold being referred to as an element has become the norm in a good portion of the Diablo games.

While the real world used to think in terms of Air/Fire/Water/Earth.
Video Games have been using Fire/Ice/Lightning and sometimes Arcane(Magic/Aether/Mana whatever you want to call it. Pure "Magic" essence essentially) for yonks. Fire/Ice/Lightning are the bog standard "Elemental Spells". Since the general bog standards are Fireball, Frostbolt and Lightning Bolt. With Arcane being notable because Magic Missiles from DnD fame. (We could also look at DnD for the Fire/Ice/Lightning standard too, given they're the main elements there with notables such as Cone of Cold, Chain Lightning, Fireball) The term "Cold" instead of "Frost" or "Ice" damage is unique to PoE as far as I'm aware. Don't know why, but eh, it matters not. |
