looking for a gem guide for leveling

Once again a new season is coming and my beginner's ass has trouble sorting out what gem to use in order to do good damage.

read this: looking for general advice.


For example, if I wanna play Arc (general popular build). I should go arcane surge, freezing pulse, then added ligthning and arc in act 1. get controlled destruction in a2, etc. This is more of a specific leveling build for arc, what I'm looking for is how to find gems that always helps in adding dmg for bossing especially.

does anybody have ever made a chart which highlight which gem is good for which class and when they unlock? Or something similar. Right now all I can come up is writing in a google doc which gem and which level to buy it.

Here's a list of every skill gem all together, the list has a few symbols you can sort by, the three circles that are red, blue, and green represent the main attributes of the game that are required, and the square + button is the level required to use.

As for picking support gems, look at the tags of the main skill you are using just under the name of the gem when you look at it. This shows you what damage and modifiers can affect the spell. I suggest looking up a few variations of what people link in builds for the skill you pick, just to read the tags and understand why they were chosen, and then you can pick and choose what you like from there.

As a final note, when you reach act 6 and return to Lioneye's Watch, you can complete a quick quest for Lilly Roth, and she will sell you level 1 versions of every vendor gem. There are some gems that are drop only.

Just use whatever supports you'd use in the final build. Ele pen(because it doesn't add much dmg early on) or other gems you can't get yet can be replaced with added lightning/fire/cold. Gmp obviously is replaced by lmp until you can get it and depending on skill can use slower proj or something else for single target. If you are doing a crit build it's usually better to focus on it later on, like blood aqueducts or maps, and maybe pick up ele overload if you are very close to it. Not sure if you've heard, but all spells are being rebalanced so i'd be surprised if anyone is making any charts yet

That is one hell of a question because there are so many possible builds out there. I think the best way is to use whatever skill gets you through the leveling process while leveling your needed "endgame" gems as soon as possible. For example (because you talked about arc) when I want to play an arc poet's pen char I know that I need 1 arc gem, 1 lightling penetration gem and 1 empower gem or increased critical strikes gem. Means I need to start leveling arc right after I get it from the The Siren's Cadence quest (act 1) even when I'm not using it at that time. Lightning penetration has then to be leveled right after the A Fixture of Fate quest in act 3 and so on. So you need to take a look at your endgame char in PoB first then take a look when you can first get all the needed gems and start leveling them as soon as possible in the meantime you play with whatever skill you want that is strong enough.

Let me clarify something. I'm not looking for a link to the wiki which I regularly visit already. I' really looking for a leveling guide, but with general rules.

I'm already aware of siosa and act 6. I'm not looking for how to get gems and where to get them, it's really more something like: level 4 you equip frost bomb because it's stronger than freezing pulse, at level 8 add ligthning dmg and make sure you pick up explosive traps for example. When I check the racers they always use a bunch of skills, even in act 1. However all the guides always suggest 1 leveling skill.
