Heralds restricted to melee only, why?

Just curious, why the big change with heralds. Must have a melee weapon equipped. No wand, though I suppose a staff might work? Hmmmmm.

The one/two I run work fine with my crossbow in hand. (Herald of Ice and Cast on Freeze, though it's not a "Herald." )

Some may be restricted, but test them out just to be sure.

Definitely don't think this is a thing. There are no INT-based Heralds maybe that's the issue?

Ya they all say "Martial Weapon" required.

Does poe 2 have a list of weapons and what they count as martial?

I think its great some skills are bound to specific weapons, bashing for maces. stabbing for spears what have you.

Martial weapons are weapons that grant basic attacking skills and are used for martial combat, i.e. hit the bad guy with the weapon/projectile.

Non-martial weapons are weapons that grant spells or spell-like skills and which are primarily used as foci for spellcasting, i.e. wands, non-quarter staves, and scepters.

Which gets back to being restricted from casters.

Ya a Witch/Sorcerer *can* use a dagger (or whatever) while giving up some serious bonuses.

Wonder if I can come up with some kind of edge build.

I think from a design perspective, Herald skills are meant to offer STR/DEX something similar to the "Cast on" line of abilities available to INT builds.

Not saying you couldn't come up with a hybrid build, but whatever you're trying to do with a Herald you can probably do more effectively with "Cast on" something (e.g., Herald of Thunder will probably feel a lot like a less powerful version of Cast on Shock w/ an AoE lightning spell socketed).
