Death Penalty Experience Points
As a player who invested 10–15 hours a week in Path of Exile 2, the experience loss from dying creates a frustrating and demoralizing gameplay loop. Unlike high-hour players who can quickly recover lost progress, more casual players are disproportionately punished. The death penalty often erases hard-earned progress, making it nearly impossible to reach milestones that unlock better gear or meaningful rewards. This mechanic doesn't just slow progression—it halts it entirely, leaving players without the currency or tools they need to improve their characters and enjoy the core loop of the game.
What’s especially disheartening is that before the introduction of this harsh death penalty, I genuinely looked forward to logging in, building my character, and working through the Atlas maps. The challenge was exciting and rewarding. But now, that anticipation has been replaced with hesitation and frustration. It no longer feels worth playing when a single mistake can undo hours of effort, with no satisfying way to recover or move forward. Last bumped3 июн. 2025 г., 10:38:47

I agree with your post wholeheartedly. I'm not a young gamer like I used to be. I have a family to take care of now, a career and daily activities. I only get to play about 3 hours every night.
I've noticed right when I hit the level 75 mark, I start to get bored. I've only gotten defeated 4 times this season, so the penalties haven't been that drastic, but seeing the negative experience is very discouraging. It makes me lose incentive to keep going simply because I no longer feel like I'm making progress, especially since I can't play as much as I used to. The game is very fun, but the closer I get to level of 100 and lose progress, the less motivation I have to keep playing. I understand why the experience penalty is there, to incentivize dying less and to keep the game challenging, giving players a sense of accomplishment, but that's not what's happening, instead, it feels like my character is not growing, defeating the purpose of playing. Maybe if they start the exp. penalty at level 90, it would be better. |

Good players dont die, so they arent hindered by death penalty.
If you die then think over why you did, change that aspect and play on. |

" Tell me how to fix all the server issues without just using the op skills for now |

As a console player that often sees dramatic shifts in performance and visual issues, xp loss is absolutely salting the wound that the developers intentionally cause.

Agreed, its why ive given up on multinplayer. With how bad the scaling is all i do is lose demonstrative amout of xp when trying to group with friends.

I always see people blaming XP loss as their reason for not progressing their characters as opposed to the fact that they are probably doing content that is too hard for them. Upgrading gear, practicing techniques + switching skills, trying different flasks/charms, etc etc are things that people think they don't need to do, and instead it is a problem with the game design...
There are easier games out there without XP loss, and if XP loss is such a big deal, maybe players should play games which don't contain XP loss. Let's work together to make this world a better place :)

" I'm definitely not better than everyone and I've probably died more times than you. I've got a crappy computer with crappy frame rates and know all about lag and dying. But I am not going to whine and complain every time I don't get my way and try to make everything dumbed down for every one else. XP loss was in Diablo 2 as well, which is the whole inspiration for Path of Exile in the first place. Shit happens. Lag happens. DDOS attacks from toxic players who keep hating on GGG happens... They have said multiple times that they are looking into why some people experience more lag than others. If a player is experiencing bad lag, maybe its not a good time to be playing the game and perhaps people should go do something else. Like, it doesn't take a genius to figure that out. If someone is so addicted that they decide to make themself suffer, that is on them. This is early access and it is to be expected that there will be a lot of issues... I am blown away that so many people are so "ignorant" of this. What I am referring to in my comment is when some people decide that instead of trying to work on figuring out the reason for dying, some people just want to take the easy way out instead of using their brain and doing some critical thinking... There are plenty of other games that don't have XP loss if people cannot handle it. Same with games that are not in BETA testing... Let's work together to make this world a better place :) Последняя редакция: LostSoulz289#8506. Время: 31 мая 2025 г., 19:43:58

" I get it, you don't agree with the post. But instead of posting what you did, which was kind of a dick reply, maybe just ignore the post and move on. Not everyone plays the same as me, not everyone plays the same as you. Not everyone has 20-40 hours a week to pour into a game. So when a death at lvl 90 and higher happens, that literally wipes away days of play time, which isn't fun. I played for days without dying, then team up with my brother and the lag monster comes by and bam, dead, no way to dodge that. These are server side issues, not local. So, it is a very valid concern when players "complain" about losing a huge chunk of XP from a single death. It makes many people stop playing, which is something you and I do not want. You do not want to drive players AWAY from the game. Driving players away from the game causes loss of revenue, loss of exposure, and an overall negative game play. My brother has quit playing this game due to the huge XP loss, hopefully he'll be back after 0.3 or 1.0, who knows. But he's not alone.. TLDR; Let people voice their concerns, if your concerns differ, ignore it. |
