Female Choices

My husband and I are playing on split HUD and it's really enjoyable. There are some technical issues on split HUD I'll mention and end of post.

I'm really not happy with the lack of female choices. We both like playing the game as a Fantasy LARP with the Live being us both on our couch together.

12 characters 6 males and 6 females is so balanced. How easy would it have been to make the a female. The Shadow character is small sneaky and has special magical abilities. Just the fact tat this is a Fantasy world that has magic is enough for any male or female to be in any role. So many great games have female warriors already. Fantasy, fantasy, fantasy.

Seeing the lack of choices I googled what was up hoping that this would change soon and saw that others were asking for this too and then seeing the responses that they were getting.

Most common response was it would mess up the lore. If you think that the guy playing Warrior who named himself Potato_Head and all the other 1000s of gaming names keep the Lore alive is just plain silly. The Warrior Lore is just 1 Warrior named what ever and the thousands of Warrior players aren't trying to replicate that Warriors life. It's A Warrior in this world.

My husband and I try on each others Armor and you guys have already made the clothes change configuration based on which gender wears them.

Nobody is asking for a detailed character creator just the ability to chose a gender.

At the very least you could have a way to be able to choose where to start your pathing once you ascend and let the current females start where ever they want or men for that matter.

Hope people keep letting them know we want this change.

In split HUD the ability to make changes to our characters like bindings or pathing stops working shortly after playing. We have to keep restarting the game every time we level up or need to add skill gems.

The reset only lasts about 5 minutes then we have to restart again next level up.

Also we have our own accounts and would love to be able to play split HUD using our own accounts. Seems like that was promised before early access and never came up to promise.

Hope these things an get fixed.

So, in PoE, the classes aren't just a starting point for skills, right? They're super tied into the lore and the identity of that specific character. Think about it:

The Duelist isn't just a warrior; he's the Duelist, with a specific background and personality.

The Witch has her own unique story that makes her the Witch.

The Shadow isn't just some sneaky dude; he's the Shadow, shaped by his specific past.

These aren't blank slates like in some other ARPGs where you pick a class and then design your character from scratch. In PoE, you're playing as these specific exiles, not just a generic version of a class. Making the Shadow female, for instance, would mean rewriting a chunk of her established background and voice lines to fit that character. It's not just a quick visual swap.

At the end of the day, the developers have a ton on their plate getting PoE2 ready. They're focused on new skills, ascendancies, zones, bosses, adding new acts, etc. Adding something like full gender swapping for every class, which would involve rewriting lore, re-recording voice lines, and potentially re-animating skills, is a huge time sink. It might pull resources away from other things that impact the gameplay experience for everyone.

I totally get the desire for more choice, and it's a valid point to bring up. But when you look at how deep the character identity is baked into PoE's design, it's not just a quick flick of a switch.
A quick fix: with 0.3 I want to create a sorcerer with attack-weapons. This is also a way how you can play a warrior etc with female character. I wish a bit more skills that support this kind of building better, but I'm sure some builds are worth to play them this way.

However, I would have no issue seeing new warrior-like classes that are females. I don't think gender swap will ever be a thing here, but a new female warrior class doesn't break the current behavior. Same vise versa with male magicians. The only thing I don't know: how deeply are unreleased characters already planned/developed?
More likely is only 10 characters are planned: 6 male with 18 ascendancies and 4 female with 18 ascendancies aswell.
I dont get why some (not many) people want this so badly. You see your character most of the time not up close and as soon as you wear a full set of equipment, the gender is hard to tell anyway. On top of that, 95% of the time you will be on maps, focusing on effects, spells, attacks, cooldowns, enemies, your health, mana and energy shield and also your surrounding area. The model of the character however will not be on your focus.

The only thing that is bothering you: you KNOW that it's not a male/female character model, despite not seeing it 95% of the time. And modeling whole characters with a full set of animation and adjusting all the armors to these new models (which is alot more work then you actually think) is tons of work for just a hand full of people.

you say that, but...

My fair lady Smithia of Kitava disagrees. She is a happy go lucky lad, that likes long walks on the sands pits. Her hobbies include strolling around banging on her very shiny tambourine and making threatening stomps at anyone or anything that is not FaBeLauSese like she is. She is single and ready to SMASH!
@PantsuFaust: Why do you think so? We have 6 starting points on skill tree. I thought at least 12 characters will be released (2 for each starting point). It would make sense if 6 males are already planed, that the last two characters are female as well.

Edit @PantsuFaust: What are you trying to say? That you want to say I'm wrong and there is a warrior lady? If so, you misunderstood what I wrote.

Because they are already made 2 pairs of clones of 6 female characters at all. So, looks like GGG has no care about this aestetical part of the game. Interesting, different characters at the begining of development? No. Take two identical blackhaired "full int" witches (one of them has shorter hair) and two identical dirty-blonde "full dex" rangers. One with a bow, second one - with a spear. Dont mistake them! So lazy design....

You'll be happy to hear that this is something they have on their radar. In December 2023, the game director replied to a reddit thread and explained why the game does not have a full on character editor, and further said "we will probably eventually have MTX's that swap the entire character out for a different one (which we would then also have voice acting for). If we did that, we would likely start to alternate gender versions of all our character classes since that is something that I think quite a lot of players would like to have."

In one of the Dawn of the Hunt updates they "Added support for a new type of Microtransaction: Character Skin." That sounds like that may be the MTX that swaps out the entire character, which could mean the alternate genders may be in development too.

I hope they do a Scion skin, since the class was cut and seems unlikely to return except perhaps in this fashion.
