Performance

This game runs like a dog turd on a hot summer day.

I have a 5800x3D and a 7900xt with 32gigs of ram at 3200mhz, and this game just tanks frames when anything to combat heavy hits during end game mapping.

Even with any sort of frame gen on the game still runs like garbage. unsure what the cause of it is, but if there is one thing I would like to see improved massively it is the performance of this game.

I don't think that using frame gen is the answer either, I think just some good old fashioned optimization is needed here massively.

Everything else crafting and itemization wise is great though. end game mapping needs some love thou, the new atlas tower system really sucks. I would rather have the quantity/rarity and what are on the maps (breach, abyss, bosses) tied to the waystones instead of the atlas map. honestly, something along the lines of Insert the waystone, then the atlas map opens and you pick the node to open.

but over all, the patch is decent the performance is really really bad. get to work GGG

I agree this game has an issue this build. POE2 Abyssal League
My system Specs:
i9-13900K
RTX 4090
64GB DDR5 6000mhz
WD Black SN850 NVme
Samsung G95SD

I run game at 5120 X 1440P (don't even get me started by lack of UW 32:9). This game runs so poorly that when running solo maps, I can get into the 30s and sometimes lower. When I play with another person, I have seen 20 frames.

Using the overlay the GPU and CPU consistently seem to peg the horizontal bar.

For reference I am playing a Ranger lightning build.

This game needs major improvements and running maps is all but impossible. Even the campaign ran terribly in certain areas.

None of the settings seem to make any real difference. DLSS on/off performance versus balance, etc.....Turning off many of the graphics settings- nothing. There is something clearly broken in this build.

Can we get some pointers? I have tried everything that is online- nothing fixes this code. Looking for GGG Mods to acknowledge the performance and provide a patch to resolve.

Thank you all so much,

Jim

It's a copy-paste code from POE1. Why do you expect this to be resolved ? If they did not resolve it in POE1 then it will stay the same in POE2.
I am also struggling with the performance a lot. Especially when it comes to Breach, Abyss and Ritual. I got myself a headhunter recently and was pretty hyped to play with it, but it just made the Performance/FPS worse. Graphic settings are as low as possible but in the encounters listed above the FPS drop to 10, so basically it's a dia show. I love this game, but it's just a pain for my eyes the way it is.

Please optimize the game GGG, I can't afford an expensive PC. These are my specs:

Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-9700K CPU @ 3.60GHz 3.60 GHz
NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2070 SUPER
32 GB RAM (2933 MT/s)
Ripped another hc character to performance issues. Think I've learned my lesson and I'm just gonna wait until things get fixed.

5800X3D, 7800XT, 32GB RAM, Games installed on an M.2 SSD.

Abyss mobs, fire/fissures/flames, karui mobs/zones seem to be the main offender.

Game literally turns into a powerpoint slideshow - can't even press escape. Something is clearly straining the CPU.
5800X3D. RTX 4070, 96GB RAM, 2x NVME SSD and 1Gbps optical fibre and game still runs horribly.

I did some heavy optimizations to make it playable, but I think for this much effort I should have it buttery smooth.

What I did:
* Forced lockstep - Only usable with ultra low latency (I have around 10ms), but it helps that game and server is synced. In predictive you just die to mobs after map load.
* Forced Resizable Bar up to 12GB to load/unload textures and shaders all at once, instead of default 256MB per batch. Faster loading, less slutter and fps drops. Profiler shows increase to 2gbps read for few sec instead of usual 100-200mbps all the time.
* NV Smooth motion - just a backup framegen to fill gaps in fps, makes game a lot more smooth
* Moved game shaders and NV cache to 2nd SSD. So I can load textures and shaders in parallel. Cutting map load speed to about half.
* 64 GB RAM used as cache in primocache, so like 2/3 of game and all shaders are precached in RAM. Still it sucks, because game still behaves like it is ssd, so I need to copy all data from one place in memory to another one. It is maybe 2-3 times faster than SSD, but still fraction of RAM speed.
* Turbo Lan (Asus) to make game packets ultra high priority.
* Switched from Vulcan to DX12. Although Vulcan runs better at default, it doesn't work with Resizable Bar, because it is lower level API than DX12 and it does exactly what dev wants. DX12 is more "dynamic", but a bit slower. And there is bug with Vulcan shaders in POE2 and Steam, where it creates unoptimal like 30GB shader cache that is heavily taxing SSD and cause slutters and FPS drops. If you disable Steam pre-caching, it is again managed by NV cache resulting in much more stable game. But it takes sooo many time in game to generate new cache.
* Deffered writing for shaders, so they are written to ram and game continues to run and dont wait. It writes them on disk later when not used. But risky, because sudden blackout can destroy all I have cached since I play game and how long it takes to build new cache...

For all of this, I have like 40-60 fps in fights. So I have to use framegen from NV, to use my 165hz monitor. Without it games slutters still like crazy.

I want atleast some options for game for texture streaming and shader caching in game. It sucks that every time I do same interaction few seconds later, it is loading from disk (or my case RAM cache) again turning my CPU into nuclear plant and loading like gigs per sec from SSD. Without RAM cache, it will kill soon my SSD with hundreds of gigs per day. Today I hit just mere 300GB read for POE2 only...
I'm curious how you are using Frame Gen? While there is a default option for DLSS, I don't see Frame Gen as an option. I have had some success with the program Lossless Scaling but knowing GGG this will be against their TOS and considered a cheat....

Their silence on this performance is very telling. And to some of the posters thinking they need a more powerful PC. Nope- doesn't help.

As stated, I have a very high-end machine, and it runs terrible. It won't help to upgrade. Save your money.

64GB DDR5 6000
Nvme (2 of them) WD BLACK SN850

Both NVidia and AMD this years allowed framegen from their GPU drivers. Just check control panel. Idk how it is called for AMD, but NV calls it smooth motion in theirs and it is "used for old or frame-capped games" to allow them run with higher FPS. But truth is, it is just more "quality" optimized alternative to lossless scaling. It doesn't run that good, but is with less artifacts and gives around 50% free "fake" fps. It works like miracle in this game, because when you have 120 fps and in fight you drop to 60, game is usually CPU bottlenecked and GPU usage drops down. It uses that unused GPU to generate it back to 120 fps dropping quality, increasing latency but you still keep smooth 120.

Also try enabling SAM (AMD equivalent of resizable bar) with DX12 and if u have two similar SSD, have game and shaders (in %appdata%/Path Of Exile 2) each on different one so they load in parallel. For each person it behaves different, but in my case it reduced that FPS drops a lot and FG as backup makes it playable. And that 3D cache on your CPU is also awesome for this game.
Almost forgot, but increase in GPU control panel limit for shader cache. This game use up to 20 gigs alone. I have unlimited size, but most people use 100 gigs. Game will remeber all previous locations you visited. On default, it will remember around 20-30 maps (or less if you play more games) and then start erasing old data because hitting cache limit. You just need space a lot of space on your SSD, nothing else. And you will see impact of this change after days or weeks, but it will slowly for each hours spent playing slowly reduce that high CPU usage this games have. + It is not deleted for new league, so you keep it and game will run better and better. :)

Alot of helpful tips for performance increase.

The 5800X3D is definitely capable of running the game very smooth for the most part. (I'm using the same CPU)
