Optimizing PoE 2 Performance
Hey Exiles,
If you're experiencing performance issues in Path of Exile 2, especially on Windows with an Nvidia GPU, here are some tips to help you get the smoothest experience possible. This includes both network and graphical optimizations. 🧠 Network Optimization: Check for Latency or Peering Issues: 1. Log into your character in PoE 2 and note the server you're connected to. 2. Open Command Prompt (CMD) as Administrator. 3. Run the following command to see all active network connections: netstat -an | find "ESTABLISHED" 4. Use a site like whois.domaintools.com or ipinfo.io to look up IP addresses shown in the output. Focus on the IPs related to PoE 2 (close in time to your login). If you’re unsure, try to have no other applications using your network while doing this. 5. Once you identify the likely IP for the PoE 2 gateway, run a traceroute to check for latency between hops: tracert <IP_ADDRESS> Note: Replace <IP_ADDRESS> with the one from your Whois lookup that returned a server in the same state as the PoE 2 server you are connected to. Example using Google's IP: tracert 8.8.8.8 🔎 If you're unfamiliar with reading traceroute results, there are many great YouTube videos or guides that break it down. We're not covering that here. 6. (Optional) Run a speed test via Google or a reliable site like speedtest.net to verify your internet connection speeds. 💡 If you're seeing packet loss or suspect deeper network issues, consider using Wireshark — but that’s an advanced topic outside the scope of this guide. 🎮 Graphics & Game Settings for Nvidia Users: 1. Use Game Ready Drivers: Open the Nvidia App, go to Drivers (left sidebar), and ensure you’re using Game Ready drivers (not Studio drivers). You can switch via the dropdown in the top-right. 2. Use Vulkan Renderer (Recommended): In the in-game graphics settings, switch to the Vulkan renderer. ⚠️ Tip: Change this from the login screen, not while already in-game. It may appear to freeze temporarily — wait a minute or two before assuming it crashed. 3. Shader Cache Settings in Nvidia Control Panel: Ensure you have enough shader cache allocated in the Nvidia Control Panel. Increasing shader cache size can help reduce stuttering caused by shader compilation. 🔧 Make sure to research this setting before adjusting — misconfiguration can cause new issues. 4. Clear PoE 2 Shader Cache (Optional): If you're seeing visual glitches or persistent stutters, try clearing your shader cache. This file is usually hidden in your system and must be manually deleted. ⚠️ Only attempt this if you know what you're doing. 5. Lower Intensive Graphics Settings: Turn down or disable the following for better performance: -Shadows -Water detail -(optional) You can also lower your other graphics settings if you want to try and boost your performance. However, research these settings to ensure that they could actually be causing problems. Turning every setting off is not always the right fix. 6. Use a Wired Connection: If you're on WiFi, switching to a wired Ethernet connection can significantly reduce latency and packet loss, especially in fast-paced ARPGs like PoE 2. you can get the server ip alot easier from the clients.txt file in the game install folder. C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Path of Exile 2\logs\clients.txt. than search for "Connecting to instance server at" and the ip for all the servers you connected to will be shown. You'll want the last one as this is a log file and will have a log from the point you first ran the game. You could also just delete the log file and it will generate a new one the next time you login to make finding them easier as it's gonna be probably hundreds of thousands of lines.
