How do you reset maps on the atlas if you didnt find the idol?

Trying to find the idol for the sealed vault or whatever its called. Completed all the maps around / connected and no idol drop.

Why is this garbage even in the game, just make the maps open.

Same thing has happened with the other maps where you need to find nearby stones or whatever. I've cleared all and had it re-open a cleared map despite me having found and clicked 5 stones/tethers.

It's like they heard player feedback about "what a slog" endgame was having to clear useless nodes to get to something fun and they doubled-down on that. Here, have more reasons to clear useless nodes.

I only had the problem with the mansion but should be the same for all of them. So you need to look for swirling blue lights at a nearby map for the next stone. They can be in the second row around if you did the closest already. And yes those lights can lead you through already done maps (which open up again when the lights go there), at least it was that way with the stones you need to break at the end of the map.
