Why is it that when I explore an area, then enter a dungeon, explore it, and then exit the dungeon again, the previously explored area becomes unexplored? The same thing often happens when I go through a portal. It's tiresome and annoying. After exploring the same area six times, I quit today and am deleting the game. Several of my friends have done the same thing – it gets tiresome to explore the same area over and over again only to find an unexplored dungeon that was previously discovered on the map and is now hidden again.

areas stay "open" for like 15ish min after you exit them after that they "close" you can hold down ctrl as you're clicking into a zone and see any open iterations you may have. As this is a server side game and keeping a running log of the state of every zone you've been thru for every character would take a stupid amount of servers. I can think of 2 places in the game where this happens early in act one when dealing with the tree/hooded one and than again around valley of the titans. I'm not trying to tell you how to play the game but maybe try and find the way points and clear any side things in zones all at once so you're not running thru the same areas that many times as you really shouldn't be.

Instances
As mentioned above, an instance is a specific, randomly generated zone using the rules defined by the area. They hold the current state of the zone, so whenever an item is dropped or a monster is killed that will be saved within the instance. The game automatically creates an instance when a player tries to join an area with the region based on the player's realm choice. If there is an existing instance already created by the player or any party members that that will be joined instead. Instances with no players in them continue to exist for a limited time (about 8-15 minutes in instances created in acts, but much longer for instances created from the map device). The instance is destroyed after the time elapses, along with the items and monsters inside the instance. When entering an area, holding CTRL displays existing instances of the area, and allows the player to create a new instance. The latter can be used to "reset" an area and start it again with a new layout, set of monsters, etc. Most instances can hold up to six players at once, with the exception of towns which can hold many more.
