Everything feels like an elementalist
|
I was watching the 0.4 release trailer and I found myself most interested in the vines skill. The shapeshifting obviously looks stunning and the team did an incredibly job. If you squint a bit and blur out the character design, however, the druid is really just a monk. In fact, it feels like everything is some flavor of an elementalist (at least visually):
- the deadeye is a long ranged elementalist - the monk is a medium ranged elementalist - the pathfinder is an elementalist without a weapon - the merc is a medium ranged elementalist with a cooldown. And everything has some "harness the power of the elements" with hurricanes, fire storms, etc. To be fair, there's good gameplay reason to settle on 3 elements, but I feel like a lot of the visual identity gets lost in a kind of same-iness. As a result, the few skills that break this archetype really stand out (vines, bones, totems). I don't think I'm qualified to propose alternatives, and I still think the vanilla fire/ice/lightning is a great starting out point. It would be really fun if we'd be able to lean into stuff like foggy delirium looking skills, treants, moonlight, etc (hopefully without breaking too much mtx). My biggest disappointment was starting blood mage for my first build and realizing there was no thematically cool blood themed things for me to do. the blood mage archetype was there soley to... scale my lightning damage. Been thinking similar thoughts not sure what to do either but could maybe give elementalist a couple extra elememts unique to them or could evolve current elememts like for them ice becomes water or somthing honestly no clue how to give everything more distinctions.

The reason for this is because the devs refuse to make ascendency's that are specific archetypes,so what ends up happening is that almost every character feels similar because said archetypes have minimal support or virtually none.
In trying to make everything flexible, nothing truly is so it all ends up the same. |
