Why the current HDR implementation is not sufficient and how to fix it (I work in the TV industry)

Hi,

I professionally test TVs and am quite proficient on using reshade to fix suboptimal HDR implementations in games using reshade.

Path of exile 2 biggest HDR issue is not having sliders which allow you to set the maximum brightness to your displays maximum brightness output (measured in nits). This means for people who are using displays which have less brightness then whatever the current value is when you click the HDR box will have washed out, blown out highlights and for people with a more capable display the highlights will be too dim.

Additionally you also want a slider which controls average brightness of the scene which should not increase the maximum brightness output but should be rather used to set the ,,middle brightness“ of the image to ensure it’s neither too contrasty nor too washed out. Ideally have the black level at exactly zero nits so black is truly black and the picture doesent look washed out. You can then include a shadow detail setting which allows the user to lift the black level in case their displays can’t show any details in very dark scenes.

Either way please allow the use of reshade again where all of this can be fixed through the software. It did work since a few patches ago. A accurate HDR image on a capable display is a absolute game changer for the visuals and lets the game look much more life like and impressive.

Apart from that I hope DLSS Frame Generation is added in the future.

Keep going you are cratering something great!

Kind regards
