Genuine question: What skill is a fire mage actually supposed to use?
|
Soooo way back in 0.1 I played fire mage, it tends to be my go-to in games like this and despite everyone saying fire was underpowered I had an absolute blast. Incinerate was very good back then (subtle foreshadowing) and with Ember Fusilade to back it up and the occasional Flameblast for big nukes I was really cruising. Firestorm has always been pretty useless.
Then 0.2 came around and they . . . nerfed firestorm for some reason? A spell no one was using, which in my experience did literally no damage? That seemed odd, given that everyone was playing either Deadeye or Huntress, to throw a nerf at Sorc but uhh... sure. They also nerfed flameblast by adding a cooldown so long that it's very difficult to circumvent, and as I recall they also screwed up its crit scaling or something. Flameblast essentially became a dead spell, I've never seen anyone make a build based on it since. Then, we came to 0.3: their 'solution' for fixing ignite, universally regarded as a bad status, involved giving you yet another stat to worry about- flammability magnitude, and this did just about nothing to make it into an actually usable status effect. This patch also added yet another indirect nerf to Flameblast in this patch by changing Solar Orb into a staffs only skill, severely restricting its use because Flameblast wants to be cast off of a solar orb rather than originating from your caster. It's another instance of them nerfing sorc and fire spells despite the overwhelming majority of the community playing Ranger. I genuinely do not understand how you have two thirds of your community playing a single ascendancy of a single class, and with this in mind you go around nerfing other classes and leaving Rhoa Deadeye alone. It makes absolutely no sense and to be honest, annoys me a little bit. Incinerate was still good coming into this, and I was still happy. 0.3 rolled around and I got a knot in my stomach when I saw the changes they were making to it, but you know what? After testing it I was able to make a build around it involving triggered Ember Fusilade, I could keep it fueled up pretty consistently, and everything was fine. Players were admittedly a bit overpowered in 0.3 because of all the new crafting but this was the first time I completed every single piece of pinnacle content the game had to offer, and I had an absolute blast. But! 0.4 rolled around and they put out a couple nerfs to Rhoa and Deadeye. Granted, they rebalanced most of that power right into Pathfinder- genuinely speaking are the devs afraid of offending people who play Ranger or something? Aaaand this is the patch that absolutely, completely gutted Incinerate to the point where it has no use case. Fuel generation cut by 150%. Fuel capacity cut down to half. Fuel can no longer be generated while using the spell. It doesn't seem like the devs actually playtested the spell, or asked anyone who used it why they enjoy using it. None of us wanted Incinerate as a finisher move that we charge up and spray for a couple seconds before having to switch back to other spells. For one thing, there AREN'T any good fire spells for us to switch over to. Ember Fusilade is by far the best option available but it's intensely clunky to use as a main spell, and its extremely low mana cost makes it absolutely terrible for charging up fuel besides that. Fireball's damage hardly scales at all, and I've already talked about how useless Flameblast and Firestorm are. Genuinely asking: What fire spells are we supposed to use? Add to that the fact that Stormweaver has options for Shock and Chill but not Ignite, plus we got third Sorc ascendancy and it's nothing to do with fire. We have Infernalist, sure, but Sorc is supposed to be an elementalist and apparently to do fire we have to spec over into witch and even then it's split between fire and demon shit and most of the passives involve damaging yourself when every other class gets to focus on just damaging enemies. In addition to this because of the way they insisted that Incinerate has to be based on Fuel now, it has anti-synergy with Demonflame and leads me to once again ask- What is your vision for fire magic in this game? We don't have usable spells. We don't have a good ascendancy option. Our status effect sucks. Why do you insist on nerfing this subclass over and over again when the overwhelming majority of players are stacked into one or two classes that are definitively not this? I have about 700 hours on this game and really enjoyed all the leagues up to this point. 0.4, I tapped out after about 8 hours when I tried the new incinerate and realized that my preferred way of playing is just hated by the devs for reasons I don't understand. If your players are building sandcastles, why are you in the business of just kicking them over? I know I'm just one guy, but I've uninstalled and won't be coming back until y'all show fire some love. It's just bizarre to have an entire spell archetype that does nothing but get shit on by the devs over, and over, and over again. /rant Last bumped15 дек. 2025 г., 08:35:45
