Can't use portal after killing boss until interaction with checkpoint

See headline. Only happened once just now but that still qualifies in my book. Killed boss, tried using portal, couldn't, other stuff like flasks worked, reassignment did not help, went to the checkpoint to get to the existing portal at the start, thought I'd try once more first, canceled the fast travel, portal now worked.
