Essence of Enhancement fails to apply to Sacrificial Regalia

l tried to apply greater essence of enhancement to a magic Sacrificial Regalia with life and resistance and got a message in chat saying "the item already has a mod of this type". This base type's local increased defense mods are newly available in poe 2, maybe they haven't been linked up to the essence yet? I didn't try the other tiers of essence, so I don't know if they are affected by this too.
