Expand + Expanse supports together

Testing on a Thunderstorm gem, the skills interface doesn't let me socket Expand (the AoE seal support) with an Expanse (the AoE cooldown support) already socketed, but the other way around works. However, when both are socketed, judging by the visual, it looks like Expanse doesn't actually work, and only the Expand AoE bonus is applied. I'm assuming part of the game considers Expanse to have the Increased Area of Effect gem category, while the rest doesn't. Only the Grants Cooldown category is actually reported on it.
