Wizardry Online, permadeath in MMOs

I've recently been given access to the closed beta for Wizardry Online. I've been watching its development for a while for one reason, it has permadeath. Usually MMOs are a long grind-fest that take hours and hours of pulling your character through a few levels. This game has the ability to kill off that character permanently...

While I love the idea of permadeath in some games(e.g FTL, Realm of the Mad God and Rogue), most of which take 1-2hours before you die, I'm not so sure I'd enjoy seeing a character I've put many hours into being permanently removed from my game.

There are some elements that persist between characters and there is a game mechanic in place which gives you the chance to save your character.

Are there many people here that look forward to that sort of challenge?

To be honest, no.

I do like the challenge of Hardcore (be it D2 or PoE), I wouldn't touch Wizardry Online with a looooong stick.

Let's see:
- Permadeath
- PvP ALWAYS on
- No way to heal but Priests and Potions

...It's meant for the truly hardcore, I hear. Well, I must admit, that sounds more for the truly masochistic/sadistic. And even though you got that thing called Soul Levels (which makes your achievements, like played quests, pass to your new character)... No, just no for me.

May it be the heaven some seem to want, but it sounds as appealing to me as a hearty smack in my face. Do not want.

I'd rather go play magicka and laugh at all the funny situations it can provide than going for a game that would make spend hours of tension on a system that fails with frequency (lag, sync, latency, hackers, bugs, glitchs, exploits).

There is a difference between hard, hardcore and punishing.

Just my 2 cents

To be honest i really appreciate the perma death in realm of the mad god...yes it's kinda annoying when your character die after you play for 1-2 hours straight, but imo it doesn't really matter since the objective is to unlock new classes, so you just have to survive until lvl20, and you shouldn't take more than 2h to do that, in many cases not even that long.
While I appreciate a good hardcore game, there's such a thing as giving griefers a big fat "WELCOME!" sign. And this here, is that. I mean, I'd much rather have fun in a more casual game than continually be on my guard for douchebags, or fearing every unknown boss in case he has a 1-shot attack.

im gone a divide my answer in to topics...first you do not have to be on your guard for duchebags every time you play, at least in realm of the mad god, because in the so called "caves" where you play to lvl up, you play with others yes but you can't attack them and neither can they attack you, it's pve with lots of players(you can fight if you accept a duel, but that's because you want to)...second, in the time i played realm of the mad god, there where no boss with 1-shot attack as you say, not even the onyx witch is the "final boss", kinda since it appears at least once a day and everyone can keep playing after she's dead.
Ah, no, I was referring to Wizardry. I played RoTMG religiously a while back, so I do know what goes on it it. It's a great game, and the permadeath makes it better. Otherwise it would kinda lead to suicidal assaults on any boss indicated without fear of loss.

Anyhoo, not bashing RoTMG here. Just bashing how Wizardry is sounding from here.

i wasn't saying that you were bashing on rotmg, just trying to help others that never played to have a better understanding on what the game is about ;)
I'm a sucker for the Wizardry name. I have a bad feeling I'm going to be sorely disappointed in this game, but I signed up for the beta anyway. Thanks for bringing it to my attention.

I'm in beta, and the game totally sucks shit, I don't know how they could make this pile of shit and call it a game.

I leveled, priest, fighter, mage and thief to lv 5, the combat and skills are just mind numbing boring and slow, the combat sucks, and everything wants to fucking kill you and you will die, traps/rock falls/spikes 1 shot kill you, mobs respawn behind you and they kill you, want loot? nope you cant have it traps on treasure chests 1 shot kill you.

There is nothing fun about the game, feels like work and grind til you die.

Uninstalled, F U C K this game.
