If RMT is against ToS, why do the sites still exist?

Many drugs are illegal, why do drug dealers still exist?

the drug parallel isnt really right imo

drugs are illegal and its illegal sales are regu...er, clamped down on by the government (law)

trading pixels for money isnt illegal as long as youre not scamming. path of exile makes it illegal in its game by banning your accounts from playing the game.

a much better parallel is an employee of a company that does a giveaway/promotion/raffle, participating in it when there are strictly offlimits

is it illegal to participate in raffles/promotions ? of course not. but you'll be disqualified from this promotion by your company, and quite likely fired.
You don't even need those sites. Orbs/items/accounts are selling [Removed by Support] like ice cream in the summer. I'm sure there is a large part of the community buying/selling stuff [Removed by Support].

I honestly have never seen a problem with RMT in games.
I thought the in-game real money AH for Diablo 3 was a huge success. It was nice to make a few bucks from a decent drop. (I don't think they shut it down because of players. There were massive legal issues to it.)

Now for PoE it's a little different with the competitive aspects, but really they can just make any competitive league self-found or just keep the races short. I haven't bought or sold anything in PoE, but I wouldn't mind selling some of my legacy gear and making a dollar or two.

The problems are:

1. As you hinted at, it ruins any competitive aspects of the game.
2. RMT leads to botting. Botting leads to oversupply of items. Oversupply of items leads to them nerfing drop rates. Nerfing drop rates leads to it being harder for normal players to get the items they need. Normal players being unable to get the items they need leads to the dark side.
3. RMT also leads to all kinds of other hacks, dupes, and other nasty exploits. It leads to those sites intentionally crashing the servers to force rollbacks. It leads to them trying to hack players' accounts so they can steal items. It leads to credit card fraud.
4. RMT means people are giving money to those third party sites instead of the actual game developers which means less money for them to actually improve the game.

And probably even more problems that I can't think of right now...

#2. The drop rate nerf doesn't need to happen. That's purely up to the game developers. If there's too much over supply the RMT will stop.
#3. This happens even without RMT. I will give you that it could make it more likely. But it happens just as much with the competitive aspect.
#4. This is an interesting argument... I guess it depends on the game since every game seems to have a different pricing model. Also keep in mind that a game must be successful to support RMT and in turn RMT can be an advertisement for that game. Lots of people played Diablo 3 because of the AH...
I actually like the drug parallel, why do drug dealers exist?

because people are willing to pay for their products

Why is there RMT

because there are folks that will pay real $$$ for in game items

if there is a demand someone will attempt to fill it
I dont see any any key!
While I don't personally have a problem with RMT--what you spend your money on is your business, and if you find something cool, good for you if you can make a few bucks--I do respect GGG's stance on it.
I don't like the drug dealer comparison. At least the law gives a fuck about them and tries to catch them. Nobody cares about RMTers though, it's isn't illegal like drug dealing.
GGG banning all political discussion shortly after getting acquired by China is a weird coincidence.

My point was simply is long as their is a demand people will break the rules (be they laws or not) to fill that demand

I dont see any any key!
