I don't find your criticism credible. For instance, the basic outline of my life could be roughly framed as:
1. Begin as full-blown typical sociopath
2. End up homeless and alone in homeless shelter
3. Decide to live more honorable life from then on out
4. Join Army, raise family, etc

However, if you think #2 was some kind of "come to Jesus moment"... well, I think it was, actually. But I'm also a lot more realistic about "come to Jesus moments."

In particular, I remember sitting in a male-only shelter, watching good old Christian ladies dish out food to scumbags, thinking to myself about how wrong they were. Specifically: "if every single man in this room died a slow painful death from starvation, slowly rotting away in some ditch, I would be glad to give my life in the same manner." I hated the people who wound up in the same place as me, because I knew most of them had gotten there the same way I had.

I didn't become a better person by magically becoming a new person. I became a better person through bristling righteous anger, directed inward. I knew there was a part of me that had brought me there, and I hated it for that, in the same way I hated the men in that room. It is still there, and I still do. One does not just erase the memory of the past.

I'm Sith as fuck, brother. But I'm trying really damn hard to be the shepherd. Because I am pretty damn sure the way the story ends is: the Sith lose, and lose big. I aim to play for the winning team.

People don't change. Not really. People grow, or more specifically they add. That might include things like the alcoholic admitting to themselves what they are, and going to meetings where every week he or she publicly announces they still are one, despite years of sobriety. That system has some degree of effectiveness because it has the courage to admit the truth. It adds awareness instead of attempting to delete temptation.

You say there are rarely do-overs in life. There are never do-overs in life. The past is part of you and always will be. The trick is moving on.

You think Adams is wrong about people having persistent character? Well, he's not. And if you think you can disprove that with "but but people behave differently when they're being watched," sorry, you can't. That just means people aren't incredibly stupid.

Pretty sure Comey's operating out of enlightened self-interest. Remember that he was involved in the Clintons shrugging off Whitewater, so he has history with them.

In this case, aside from perhaps experiencing some shame at being cold-shouldered by other FBI agents (and, reportedly, scolded by his wife) for letting Hillary of the hook the first time, Comey knows he would fare poorly under a Trump administration. Better to "side with the angels" now, than get caught up in the net of co-conspirators Trump's gonna throw over the swamp in DC in January.

I think Weiner's laptop was simply the first good opportunity Comaey had to re-open the investigation, and he jumped on it. Trump should ask for Comey's resignation when he takes office. =^[.]^=

I've seen/read/heard a lot of speculation on Comey's motives for this, but no one (currently in an official position) on the record. The one that resonates with me personally, is the repeated assertions (since the initial announcement of Comey to not prosecute came out) that a LOT of FBI agents were disgruntled, fed-up or what have you.

The line of thinking is that enough of them (Several dozen, a few hundred? Hadn't seen a number) were going to quit and after quitting announce that they quit due to lack of confidence in the way the FBI was handling things.

If true, this undermining of public confidence could short circuit any future protection schemes - and if the corruption goes as deep as it seems, they would need a lot of future cover.

I'd also heard that agencies outside the FBI had access and the ability to dig into some of this stuff themselves - which would wreck any kind of cover up.

All speculation though, with the only on the record support coming from former intel people.

I doubt Comey made this decision without some very careful deliberation. How much pressure he was under, and whether this pressure made him decide something out of character, I have no idea.

Glad there's only one more week of this insanity.
