Imagine a marathon were 1000 runners are about to race. 100 of them get together and approach the people sponsoring the race and one guy says " Hey it's not fair, the same guys always win. All they do is train and have the best teams." Then another guy says " I have a job, and a life I can't even compete in the full race. This isn't fair because I competed in a shorter race, please change the race to be fair to all." Then a few people say "O ther races were shorter with better prizes why should I even race, please change your race to be as equally profitable to all people, no matter how much time they have to invest."
I don't enter javelin toss competitions because its not in my range of things I can accomplish in my life, with the time and skills I have. I don't try to change the javelin toss competitions rules to accommodate my life, that's silly.
In response to above, I care because when a game developer starts catering to the demands of the "fair" and "easy for all" soap boxers the game quality suffers. If you need rewards for playing a game(or competing), then you're doing it wrong.
Just as a counter to your point, When you sign up for a Marathon you get some swag such as a jacket or T-Shirt. If you actually finish the Marathon you get a Medallion and other really cool stuff that says in effect, I did something cool.
That doesn't mean everyone gets the same thing as the top finishers, The best get the cool cash prizes, the cars, the cute models, etc. And I don't think everyone wants the PoE Rewards to be egalitarian, they simply want to know if they accomplish something they'll get their medallion or Belt Buckle or what not.
I suspect this is a learning experience for the devs, who've done a tireless job, and I think that some of the complaints about the rewards for a single event are a bit overwrought. The game is amazing, you don't have to pay anything unless you wish to donate, did I mention the game is amazing? So they might have erred on the event rewards for this race, it's not the end of the world. and certainly isn't some sort of death knell for PoE!

If we gave large reward points prizes for getting to certain levels then all players who are competing in Season One would feel compelled to get to that level in the one week race for the sake of getting those prizes. It would mean that people's hard work getting to the skill level required to win decent point rewards from the shorter races would be invalidated by slow and steady participation in this league (a week is plenty of time to get to level 60 or whatever the tier would be).
If we gave out small rewards points prizes for specific levels then people would complain that getting to level 60 is too much work for say two points (compared to the shorter duration races). Our goal is not to make people play in a one week event for the sake of it. They should play because they're going to have fun or because they think they can do it better than other players.
The goal of the one week race is to:
a) Provide a place where people who want a fresh league/economy for a week can play. These people don't necessarily care about the season reward points.
b) Provide a way for racers to show their mastery of longer duration events. They have to make tough choices about how much of that one week event they want to give up for smaller events that may win them more (or less, upon death) prizes.
There will be other one week events in the future with much more generous prize structures. That's not appropriate for this particular slot in Season One though.
We are listening hard to the feedback and making changes (for example moving the event times around to be better for Americans and adding one-point thresholds for the shorter races). I'm sorry that we're holding our ground with this race, but we do feel it's going to be a fun event and an important (but not overwhelming) contributor to the results of Season One.
I wish more people would actually read this post before complaining. Rewards are just that REWARDS. If you don't like the prizes for a race then goto another race. There actually are other races. Like people have said. It is more worth while for them to go play a bunch of small races. Then great go do that if that makes you happier.
Stop complaining about bonuses, GGG is not obligated to get everyone the coral ring or any of the prizes. If you race and get the points you get it, if not then you don't. They aren't giveaways so please stop acting like they are.
Just upset that I read through more than 10 pages of people complaining when many of them already said themselves their solution. If you want to do many small ones instead of a big race go do it.

that is why dont play these races. its for the nolifes and the hardcore. GGG doesnt want to award people that plays casually and solo. maybe you guys should wait until there is an option for grouploot or instanced loot, and when the prizes will be awarded to even the noobest players.

Agree, also marathons take like 8-10 hours if you WALK. That doesn't require you to no life for 1 week with the potential to get no points at all. And as he said you usually do get a t-shirt, jacket, or pin of some sort saying "hey you entered". And if you finish at all you get a medal of some sort. IMO what they should have done is taken out all the other races for the week and then put a lot of points into this race for getting to like lv 60-80 or something. That way people feel acomplished at the end who played a lot and lived, as well as collected near a weeks worth of points.
|
|
Most marathons I have seen have no rewards of any kind and you still have to pay to participate so I don't know what people are complaining about on that note. And again, if you want a reward for leveling play in the other races. Ok you don't have 1 week of time to race ... soooo play in the shorter races that give you points for leveling. There are 11 other races Mon-Sat and you are complaining.

Started hours late,
quit in the points at rank 474! (I'm certain by tomorrow morning I won't even be close but oh well) .... I was shocked I was so high on the list honestly.

Spent hours carefully leveling to 34 with a melee marauder and the game fucking crashes. Great. What a waste of time. That is so unfair. Fix this crap.

People complain that only the top players get the best rewards probably never participated in an actual race before, that's the aim of races, not to reward people for participating. You should be aiming to finish at the top to begin with. If you don't have the time to invest in long races stick to the many short ones that are held every week. There's no need to participate in every single race in the season.
About solo having no chance: It is a party race, it is working as intended. If you don't have a party and you don't think you'll make it to the top places, stick to shorter races that are more balanced when it comes to solo vs party.
As for prizes, yes, GGG screwed up, but not with these prizes, with the ones in CB. They got people used to easy currency, which was a bad call since now the majority of people expect either currency or godly items as an incentive to race, which is the wrong mentality. Again, in a race you should aim to finish first, and there's no argument, the prize for that IS godly. Even if you don't like it you can sell it for your so desired currency.
There's no obligation to participate in this or any other race, so if for whatever reason you think it's not worth your time, simply don't participate. Different races appeal to different people.
