Cold to Fire Gem. Any uses?
Title pretty much says it. The Cold to Fire gem. Has anyone been able to make it useful? I've wracked my brain trying to come up with a scenario where it would be better to drop a slot on this gem instead of using another support. Wondered if anyone a bit craftier than I had come up with a use for it.

Not sure. I want to add a question. If you crit using this gem and uses only cold damage, does all damage count in the ignited part ( or only 25%)?

I'm considering using it for my ele-proliferation burning arrow.
I run hatred, and sometimes a crit will just freeze-kill a mob, and I dont get the burning proliferation. If I used cold to fire, my hatred damage would turn to fire and increase the burning even further. |

I have tried using on my crit freeze pulse shadow but that only alternated crits between fire and freezing and freezing is way better. Maybe in a situation where there were cold resist monsters? I have a map that is 75% immune to cold. Added fire only works with melee but what about a wand or unique that added fire damage? Then you'd have 40% converted plus 25% or more added? Not sure, again freezing seems better to me at least for my guy but maybe more damage could be better for some.

Lets look at the skill with discharge... Fire Damage Cold Damage Base Damage per charge 250 204 Charges 3 3 Base Damage 750 612 Modifier 1.8 1.8 Modified Damage 1350 1101.6 Sum 2451.6 Fire Damage Cold Damage Base Damage per charge 250 204 Charges 3 3 Base Damage 750 612 Cold to Fire 440.64 -440.64 C2F Base 1190.64 171.36 Modifier 1.8 1.8 Modified Damage 2143.152 308.448 Sum 2451.6 Note that sums are the same. Thus, if you only have +ele or + spell (that is why I use the modifier of 1.8 for both), cold to fire is kind of useless. Only when you a) have a large amount of +% fire damage, b) taking advantage of burning damage, do you actually see a benefit. Here is case a) Fire Damage Cold Damage Base Damage per charge 250 204 Charges 3 3 Base Damage 750 612 Modifier 2.1 1.8 Modified Damage 1575 1101.6 Sum 2676.6 Fire Damage Cold Damage Base Damage per charge 250 204 Charges 3 3 Base Damage 750 612 Cold to Fire 440.64 -440.64 C2F Base 1190.64 171.36 Modifier 2.1 1.8 Modified Damage 2500.344 308.448 Sum 2808.792 Case B) Is easy to understand. Burning damage deals a % of damage based on the original fire damage dealt. Thus, increasing fire damage increases burning damage. Kripp's Build uses both case a) and case b). He accumulates frenzy charges with blood rage and uses the searing touch unique, which augments fire damage (case a)) and increases burning damage (case b)). Thus, cold to fire is useful in this case. |

i use it on a 4l
ice spear add lightning ele prol cold to fire the 2nd form of ice spear will mostly crit resulting in a freezed/shocked/ignited mob if i ever get my carcass jack to 5l 6l i would make icenova chance to ignite cold to fire add lightning conc effect fastcast ( i dont think you need ele prol for this setup cause its only 1 hit everything is ignited or nothing it isnt rolled individually) https://poe-ssf.herokuapp.com/. I am going to build Ice spear burning build.
Ice spear Cold to fire Ele prolif Increased burning dmg /in case of 5L Increased crit dmg and in tree all possible burning passives + crit multiplier. Dunno if that may work but I will try. :) |
