After watching the video detailing the new unique Wings axe, my guess is that since the weapon acts as one weapon, you can still equip a shield and receive blocking bonuses etc from the shield, the only difference is that it is displayed on your back instead of in your offhand.
That's my guess, and I'm hoping I'm right because that opens up a whole other world of builds.
There's a "sword on back" microtransaction coming. GGG uploaded a youtube video of it here youtube link.
The shield is probably a similar microtransaction. One that thematically fits the second orange portal we just saw.
I wasn't aware of that video. That completely debunks my theory.
And to the person that said "get blocks from a shield on your back".
I didn't necessarily mean it actually blocks, but some of the stat buffs could still be carried over, and you could still have your skill gems socketed...But still, this video makes more sense.

I'm really impressed at the native resolution of the art assets in the game. Seems pretty futureproofed.
