Another Game of the Year Award

It is a pretty clear fact that orb drop rates are bad, bad for the game, bad for crafting, bad for retention.

Now, whether there is denial, or ignorance, I don't know. Probably both.

But wait, how can this be a niche game, if the niche it pleases requires so many non-niche players to feed the orbs?

Answer? It can't. It can, and will, fold.
The model GGG chose fails at retention in so many ways.

The number of orb drops and the chances that the orbs will craft a usable item are somewhat out of balance. (Not quite enough orbs)

Crafting a high end item, and the number of orb drops is not not enough if you are trying to do this on a regular basis.

Crafting a top end item, and you will probably need an entire season's worth of orbs on average to get there.

The higher you go on these crafting tiers, the bigger the "luck" factor can be.

Does crafting need to be improved? Yes - with some additional targeted crafting recipes and the middle range and slightly above. Recipes with more than a single mod.

The "niche" that this game appeals to, does not "require" any crafting to succeed in. If crafting were required to succeed, there would be problems.

Judging by past experience, what would benefit the crafters and all the people wanting better drops the most would be Act 4.

Before act 3, there was no alchemy recipe, nor fusing, chance, scour or regret recipe. 6 linking items was still possible, but fusings were in much greater demand.

The Eternal orb is relatively new, and it is intended to be a very expensive way to allow do -overs to try to get the mods you want. Before the eternal orb, it wasn't possible to use more than 4 (usually 3) exalts on an item.

If GGG adds in more vendor currency recipes and higher level areas (especially a higher level act boss) than people will naturally have a lot more to craft with and a better base of items to start with.

As long as we keep the posts civil and constructive, then GGG can gather feedback from them and make changes to the game as necessary.

If you have specific suggestions for improvement, than by all means post.

I sincerely doubt GGG will make the game easier or shower players with great items in a short period of time.

That doesn't mean they can't and won't find ways to make the game more rewarding for players.

Ideas and suggestions will do a much better job at getting there, than repeatedly pointing out the same dislikes.

I think you misunderstood. I'm not and never have said crafting is required to succeed.

I simply pointed out that 2 categories of players that the current model appeals to, require a massive amount of people that the current model doesn't appeal to. To supply the orbs that ARE required to do what they do.

I pointed out just one of the many flaws in the model GGG chose, believe me, it fails as a retention model in a lot of ways. But even worse, fails at being a niche model. It just point blank fails long term.
Casually casual.

I can't seem to find this mentioned anywhere, but i was just browsing last weeks PC Power Play, an Australian magazine also sold in NZ, and Path of Exile is their Game of the Year.

I'd post a link but the magazine's website is about 2 weeks behind the printed copy.

GGG obviously already know about it though, as Chris did a small interview for it.

PC-Gamer 2013 awards don't even give PoE an honorable mention. A few issues back just the announcement by Blizzard of what's coming in D3 Reaper of Souls got them the cover and a full article. I guess hosting your own game convention (Blizzcon) does give you media attention and publicity that no one else can afford to do. Last fall (OB PoE) PC-Gamer gave a very small plug for PoE as a free-to-play arpg. Since then there hasn't been much until the on-line edition of PC-Gamer reviewed PoE and gave it an 84 out of 100 score.
"You've got to grind, grind, grind at that grindstone..."
Necessity may be the mother of invention, but poor QoP in PoE is the father of frustration.

Your point?
GGG banning all political discussion shortly after getting acquired by China is a weird coincidence.

and still no answer. LOL.

Brian didn't even apologize for his remarks I doubt any kind of answer is in the works. This thread probably become officially dead the minute he made that post because if anyone else made that post mods would have removed it.

I've called out the end game design numerous times, as have many others. The reality is that end game EVERYTHING is absolute shit. It actually discourages play, and every single person that I know who left did it because of end game drop rates, crafting, and maps. That's it. The mods attacked that other guy because he has some low level chars, but they won't respond to someone like myself with thousands of hours played and questioning the same end game design.

I actually uninstalled PoE during OB. My brother in law talked me into re installing again to play Nemesis with some of our buddies. 3 months into Nemesis, every single one of us had quit and out of our whole group only 2 of us still have the game installed. The problems that have plagued this game for over a year have players not even wanting to give the game a shot down the road.

Those of us who truly love the POTENTIAL of crafting/end game content will despise it's current state the most. GGG designed an amazing crafting system and amazing affix system, and instead of allowing the 8-12 hour a day players to experience it, they gave us the "not for you" treatment. If it's not for the guys who are playing 70 hours a week, then who the fuck is it for? RMT users, bots, trade flippers, and currency dupers of course.

I did have fun rerolling a few times and doing some races, so I had no problem supporting GGG with my money for the good times had.

(Casual players and altaholics please don't attack me. This perspective is from a die hard solo player)

TheAnuhart +1

There is a reason why content is being released so frequently and why there are leagues every 4 months. It is to draw in the casual players to farm the orbs for the higher echelon of players.

I've written some pieces about this on the forums.

Basically people get "fished" (we all know GGG loves fishing right?) by the complexity and the "theory-crafting" at first glance. so they support with $$$ and help the economy by farming low content for orbs, it's only after a great sum of hours most people start to realize how hollow the experience is. But by that time, a lot of new people got fished, so it does not matter.

It's quite a good model imo. But like you mentioned, there "could" potentially be a time when there will be no more "fish", but i highly doubt it will be very soon.

It's like the whole "we made a hardcore game designed for hardcore players" thing.

Hardcore has a lot of different meanings, so a lot of people get "fished" thinking it is there idea of hardcore, only to realize at end-game, it is not.
Freedom is not worth having if it does not include the freedom to make mistakes

Crafting doesn't exist in POE. Gambling does...and the house always wins.

Velocireptile - I LOL'ed. Which made me fart. I wish the office were empty right now :(

Hardlicker - I had to push the dog out of the way so I could get to the sexy quilt.
