Bandits and Griefing on Hardcore

So, I just got griefed by 2 people who started "KILL OAK" groups on hardcore. They waited until everyone clicked "kill bandit" then stand next to us, and click "help bandit".
The 3 pugs who joined the group all instantly got frozen and killed by the players. I didn't even think this was possible (first time playing this game). Seems really retarded that GGG put a feature in the game to ASSIST players in griefing others looking to party for a hard boss. Well, the more you know. How? I didn't even know you could attack other players in this game, outside of pvp.
Exactly how am I supposed to know it flags me as an available target to them? And why in the hell would they even add that as a mechanic?
