OK, when you save the file. Name is as an example, loot.filter the .filter is a must. Right below the text field where you name the file, there is a "file type dropdown" select the drop down, there should be two options. Select "All Files" and it will save as an blank white page.
That's the file you need, saving it normally just makes it a text file and doesn't work.
Place the file in My Documents - My games - path of exile
Just drop it into the poe folder stated above and you should be golden.
If you already have the file saved as a text file you MUST delete the old file and create a NEW one. You cannot, I repeat cannot save the old existing text file as a new file it will not work.
Just delete the old one and save the new file as all files as stated above.
just a slight correction, you can save as -> all files -> replace your old one. Deleting before you save a new one seems troublesome.

Ah my apologies I never thought about that. I'm the one that figure out how to fix this for him on reddit btw. Thanks for correcting that, I figured it would be best to just delete it all together but whatever works really.

I just wanted to add 1 other thing. My problem was I tried to go to the GrindingGearGames/PathofExile folder under the hard drive. This did not work. You must put it My Documents>My Games>Path of Exile for this work.

Hello! Was scratching my head here for quite some time and getting really annoyed. Had used lootfilter before and it worked great, but after a reinstall of windows (10) it suddenly did not work.
Problem in my case was that bloody "OneDrive" had highjacked my "Documents" folder, so the default path /computername/documenta/mygame, was infact the wrong folder. I had to place it in Onedrive/documents/mygames..
Hope this can help another person as dopey as me :)
