Were traps totally unusable pre incursion?

Having spent a few hours playing a trapper for the first time in my 5 years of playing poe I can say my initial reservations about the playstyle being too clunky or slow were unfounded.

My question is, how much did incursion actually improve traps:
1. Were traps mostly this powerful minus the insane base damage of arc?
2. Would traps still be strong without the existence of arc?
3. Are there any trap builds that compete with arc at the moment or is it the case that it's really arc doing the work and not the trap archetype itself?

Most traps hit for more damage, but you were really restricted by the cooldown.

Cooldown mostly...
Traps were the good gimmick to instagib bosses.
They were really good at what they did.
i have played a sharpnel shot traper in a past league with tinkerskin, chin sol bow and deerstalker boots and it was impressive how fast hi could insta kill bosses.
not as fast clearing as arc trapper but it was good enough back then.
traps were "ok", could clear all content nevertheless.

but devs are like, make it 10 times better than before and bust it up to infinity like it is done with arc right now for example. and still leaving kinetic blast untouched as the only single skill u can use with wands. 4 link to 1 shot whole game with 1c weapon. ding dong GGG. this league is so free and insanely easy. the game got turned down so much like it was done to D3. i do not understand the process behind this, but i assume its because the chinese community focus right now.

They got progressively worse as the clearspeed meta kept switching into higher gears. Cooldown was the thing you got shafted by, it was simply impossible to throw traps as fast as self-cast/totem builds could do their thing, and the added damage was irrelevant for trash anyway.

Builds that used 2-3 different trap setups to rotate between, or ones that used DoTs for their damage were kinda doable, but there was just no reason to do it. Anything a trapper could do, some other build could do better.

arc right now for example.

Arc is still trash. Its barely more potent in high game content than builds that are never used because they are too weak. At least with a tornado shot, KB build, Magma orb, and the long list of other skills you can turn out to do something about the endgame. Now, if you bring me "arc Mines" or "arc Traps". I will simply say that you could kill end game content faster with a Shrapnel Shot Trap or almost any other traps. Arc as self cast is still the go to if you wanna have poor endgame experience. Having friends in all league they will all say the same. Self cast arc is terrible when things get real. <--- Friends that play SC and HC league all game up because its terrible at boss and if you have a build that is good at boss you 99% of time dont even need to care about monsters.. You still burst packs. what's the point to overkill packs if you suck at bossing ?

u dont know what u are saying it seems, arc has noe 115% MORE DMG against first target of chain and has a secondary hit. ARC is THE MOST OP SPELL RIGHT NOW. it clears with white items everything from itself.
Traps were pretty much the same, the biggest thing they suffered from was no recovery (wrong side of the tree for regen, can't leech, didn't have regen from traps at the time)

the trap support gems always blown packs up, I used to do bladefall traps as a league starter and it'd melt shit it was pretty fun.

But mines were always better, and they are still pt starved compared to many other specs. Its hard to make a tanky trapper that still does the damage.

Edit: Though the new traps do so much damage the 1000 hrs meme is bound to come out somewhere, they buffed a shitload of skills and somehow managed to make it feel worse than before when they introduce things even more broken than the things they were buffed to fix.

Meanwhile IB got a like 15% damage increase, Arc gets like 200% and they were worried that they'd go overboard on infernal blow so gave it this tiny putz buff -_- I just don't get it.
