Surely so many people trying to offload Vaal Arc means it's not very popular. They must think it's crap, and want rid of it. GGG should boost it really, maybe people will want to keep it then.

But that info is available form poe ninja where it looks at actual profiles and not just what's for sale since what's for sale doesn't 100% mean it's popular. Same results but then again no surprises there. Arc, BV, Ele hit, TS are top skills. |

This analysis ignores the reality of a lot of skills. Yes, Arc is very popular right now, and quite strong. There's also no way it's 26x more popular than Righteous Fire. So why are there so many more high level Arcs for sale? Arc gets a lot better with level, especially level 21, so arcers are incentivized to level tons of gems trying to get that level 21 corruption, and then they sell the leftovers. Righteous Fire gets relatively little from level. You get better radius, but that reaches its practical max at 20, not 21 (no need for tons of level 20 gems trying to hit the good corruption). You also get some spell damage, but there's absolutely no difference in the RF damage itself between a level 1 gem and a level 20+ gem.

I suspect a better measure might be the PRICE of the gems. Assuming that the most popular skills have the highest price, and trash skills are sold for dirt.

Man, that's bad here. A lot of people simply vendor / ignore gems that aren't popular and won't even bother putting them in stash. Everyone knows that Arc is popular so everyone lists / levels it. Frost Bomb / Vaal Cold Snap are good at level 1 as well etc.
All in all, it's a deceiving list and I wouldn't base anything on it aside from level 20 gem market popularity which is kinda irrelevant for almost everyone. However from my trade experience, Arc users(especially Saboteur) are about 20x more than RF users(on the other hand, maybe RF users need special equipments that will not be owned/prioritized by an Arc user like me).
