I think the archetype can work but some decisions in this guide are questionable. Take a look on poe ninja to see what others are doing imo

I'm sorry if this has been asked before and the question is mainly brand related rather than build related but playing Brands for the first time. Am i correct in saying that the right way to play is to place 3 brands on ground at the start of the map and then only Recall them as you go rather than keep recasting Wintertide over and over again as you zoom through maps? Or no difference and you can just cast a brand on each new pack as you zoom through a map?

Wintertide brand has two damage components - one while it is attached to a target, and a short secondary damage over time when the brand is removed from a target.

With the brand mastery to re-attach, this is mostly handled automatically when clearing packs.

You mostly will use Brand Recall on single target, to repeatedly rip the brands off and re-attach them to re-trigger the secondary damage over time.

Brand recall does not extend the duration of brands any more, it just relocates them and increases the attachment range, so they'll rip off targets to you and then immediately re-attach if anything is in range - this is mostly only useful for Armageddon, Wintertide and Arcanist brand. Storm brand and Penance brand don't benefit as much from the interaction.
