Died Top 100 HC to CI + Heavy Buffer — Add a Warning for This Gotcha
Whelp, that’s a wrap.
Just made it to top 100 in Hardcore SSF and hit #3 Sorceress on the POE2 ladder at level 66. Was feeling super ready to climb fast and reliably—picked up 3 levels that hour after a solid session. Finally decided to trust Chaos Inoculation (as it feels a little weird to have only 1 hp) and lock in the build with nearly 4k Energy Shield. My longtime POE buddies always swore it was the best QoL move in the game, especially with all the chaotic explosions and visual clutter flying around. Had the spare point ready, but still triple-checked with various folks to make sure nothing would insta-kill me. Everyone said it was safe… and then I got insta-clapped by a small hit. Hell of a way to go out, lol. Makes for some decent comedy, I guess. It’s just way too easy to overlook—even for the experienced players I asked, it can easily slip people's minds. Even the #1 Hardcore Sorceress this season didn't think of it right away; it's too subtle to always remember as a human being. Turns out the basic Energy Shield node Heavy Buffer has a sneaky little “gotcha”: it bypasses 5% of damage to life if your spec shifts. Maybe one day the devs will toss in a warning when both nodes are selected at the same time, since it really doesn’t make sense for such a common ES node to have such a subtle trap. One way to trip at the "finish" line after getting all setup past the story line. GG! Additional Notes: Would love to see this flagged more clearly, either in the tooltip or as a passive interaction warning—especially for HC players. The info's out there, but something as important as this is too easily buried, hence a "gotcha". Same thing with the River Hag—there have been hundreds of complaints about it. It’s essentially a pinnacle-level boss mechanic hidden on an otherwise ordinary white monster, with barely any visual indication beyond a small slowing bubble and slightly hazy screen. You can play through multiple times and never even realize the mechanic exists… until you're on a safe, slower HC build in Act 3 and suddenly get deleted, with all your life and defenses bypassed because you "drowned" in 3 seconds (even if you're level 90+ tagging along with a friend in low level difficulty!). These kinds of hidden, punishing “gotcha” mechanics aren’t healthy for the broader community—especially in Hardcore, where awareness and preparation are supposed to be the core pillars of survival. And yes, I get that someone might say, “well, awareness is key”—I agree. That’s why I triple-checked my build with experienced players before making the switch. The fact that I still died, despite doing my due diligence, is exactly what makes this a gotcha mechanic—not a meaningful challenge. I understand some players enjoy brutal or obscure mechanics and might see this as part of the appeal—but this isn’t that. Gotcha mechanics aren’t genuinely difficult; they’re simply neglectful design unless the goal is to cater exclusively to that small, in-the-know subset of the player base.
