The initial transition to the totems was quite difficult without damage,the totems attack slowly but after upgrading the weapon and leveling up, it becomes very strong.
A drawback is that the sheer number of explosions is quite harsh on the eyes and completely obscures the screen, it's literally impossible to see anything at all.
