What are they defending me from? Other warriors. It's a protection racket. They defend us from the big bad government of other countries that also want to claim ownership of us so that they can "defend" us instead. The only sense in which I think it's good that we have the military defending us is in the sense that it could be the military of an even worse government.

The real world isn't like Wraeclast, there's no endless tide of monsters bent on humanity's destruction; it's just other people like you doing it to some other people like you.

To bring it back round to the original point, we then have people trying to distract us from the actual problem of people killing each other or trying to enslave us by pointing at some harmless women and yelling "EVIL!"
