Loot turning into shards?

I've had 3 instances now where a strongbox with the affix "drops an additional unique" dropped no uniques, but did drop 1 chance shard.

I understand that a portion of loot that drops is converted into gold without the player seeing the items themself. But does anyone know if the same applies to currency shard drops or had similar experiences?
