What's going on with Blood Elementals?

They allegedly deal just Physical damage, yet why are they chunking for over 1k energy shield? They also seem to stun far more often (which does make sense in the melee/physial context). Are they just through-and-through haymakers?? I'm talking about just the purely White mobs, non-boosted iterations. Is there a mechanic I'm missing?
