I'm doing that very thing as well. Skipping ex spending on chests. A simple fix here where everyone would be happy is a potential for a full refund on chest costs once you beat it. Potentially a great atlas passive point or something there.

I'm currently specced out of strongboxes, but I found the researcher ones provide a steady income of mid-tier currency. I'll throw an alch or a regal on them before opening.

The other boxes are sometimes neat when they drop stuff with 15% quality or so.

But overall I'm not super hot on strongboxes, they feel fine.

The only strongboxes i open are researcher and ornate and only if i get raity/quantity on them, most of my div´s i got out of the researcher
