Exalt slam.ruining items

This keeps happening. I'll have a good item that is my level and I'll hit it a couple of times with exalt and then BOOM it's 20 levels higher and completely useless.
That is not "fun" at all. It's pathetically abysmal development to make players waste their time and currency if they can ruin their gear by upgrading it.
There has to be a way or warnign or something. Just don't allow it if it's already equipped.
I'm so fucking pissed.

If the itemlevel is higher than it should be for your level, that can happen.
It´s a risk you take upgrading items that dont suit your level.

The problem with that is that it was fine until the LAST mod. It's not my fault for doing what the game wants me to do with the things the game gives me to make the game more fun and respectful of my time.
GGG can make these items that are already equipped NOT add the mod if it's going to raise the level.
And even with that, TWENTY levels? From 40 to 60?! That's not "skill issue L" that's GGGreed
