Game Crashes Attempting to Load Character

I was in a party with another player and I had a fettered monstrosity as a specter with infernal legion. We loaded into the normal dreadnought map with stuttering and it looked like enemies hadn't spawned. The legion effect loaded in strange (looked like streaks across the screen). My friend got the normal cut scene animation and I was stuck at the waypoint waiting for the invisible cut scene to finish so I could move. After the enemies spawned and we started attacking, both of our games crashed. Repeated attempts to load in resulted in crashes after hearing choppy sound effects but not getting out of the loading screen. I was able to load every other character I had without issue. After waiting the 15m for the map to reset, we are still unable to load into those characters without crashing.

Is there a way to recover our characters, or are they (and all their gear/gems) lost?

Ok, for anyone else that encounters this issue and thinks they've lost their character, here's what has worked for me.

• Waiting the 15m for the map to reset doesn't work. Waiting somewhere between 1 and 2 hours seemed to move my character back to the starting waypoint, pause the game, and de-spawn my specter. The first time this happened, as soon as I moved the game un-paused, spawned my specter, and immediately crashed.

• After waiting another hour or two I logged back in and was able to load my character in the same state mentioned previously. This time however, I pressed my weapon swap to make sure my specter didn't summon (it flashed briefly but did not crash the game). Then I was able to move around normally and even teleport back to the caravan.

There is definitely something wrong with the dreadnaught map when using the fettered monstrosity specter and the infernal legion support gem combination; I haven't had this issue on any other maps in ACT 2 using this specter with that support gem so far.
