Vaal skills are basically a giant noob trap.

I really think the game needs more sockets, probably an extra 4L that you acquire by leveling. The game and socketing system were originally built around the assumption that 5/6L would be the "nukes" or "ultimates" with unsustainable cost, but now we have to use those slots for basic abilities. Mana costs have become more sustainable, and monster life has risen to make sustaining those 5/6L abilities necessary. But the linking system is now allowing us fewer active abilities than originally planned, especially now that CwDT and auras seem so mandatory. I think this is what the OP is really pointing to--we keep getting these new toys, but the toybox has been full for a while.

That last sentence is very, very good.
Not saying it isn't (very) good, or that it isn't full, but... how is that a bad thing? I think it's good when you have several skills you want to use, but you can't, forced to choose a limited selection among numerous viable alternatives. I personally view this as a very good thing, encouraging much more emphasis on decision-making in build design.

Whether or not these skills are a noob trap remains to be seen. The one thing I do fear is that the more "AoE" Vaal skills will be largely ignored, while the more "single-target" ones will be embraced; if this isn't a distinguishing feature of the added Vaal abilities themselves, then it's likely the ones based on single-targets will be the more effective. This is because spam is for murdering mass numbers of whites, and charge-up is for dealing with rare/unique monsters and specific counters; for example, using a single-target bow skill with Trap support to deal with Evangelists.

If i remember right there already was that inventory slot for pants. Some characters even need this slot graphic wise :P

I'd actually argue it's the real issue. I think the number of available sockets is high enough to encourage meaningful choice of which skills to use. However, the color and link requirements make it a very real chore to actually execute that plan -- especially in the case of 5- and 6-links.

It's actually really simple. Give players the equivalent of a horadric cube that can contain vaal skillgems. Any support gems or other skillgems put into it slowly get corrupted.
This way, everybody can have one ultimate while not having to sacrifice our cwdt/regular combos. As we barely have enough space as it is.
Vote +1 to change Path of Exile to Path of Nerfs.
We hate to say, but ProjectPT was right.
I wonder if the Vaal skills work as their common versions until charged up? That would mean you could just swap your main skill with the vaal version and UBER now and then with the same support gems.

Would love to see the Vaal Fireball with chain. :-P

In the teaser video for (what is now known to be) Vaal Cyclone Chris posted last week you can clearly see the skill icon "charging" as it kills enemies. Same with the Detonate Dead. It doesn't seem like GGG minds that interaction, so far at least.

Now that I think about it, Corrupted versions of each skill essentially mean that SotV is functionally adding about 100 new active skills to the game.

That's a metric shitload of content.

I think it's safe to say they can't all be noobtraps. (It's also safe to say at least some of them will be.)

Knowing that you can't use the Vaal skill normally while it is charging is a real kick to the anticipation gems.
