I feel like if I post any of the music I listen to here I'll get thrown to the lions

As Thomas Aquinas famously said, 'beware the metalhead of one genre.'

Right now I'm blasting Yousei Teikoku, and after that I think there'll be a little...hm, Carmina Burana. Yes.

__

Vulcan: oh, she knows the meaning of the song. It's still a lovely duet, something not exactly common to the metal world. :)

A great save for it would be that you'll say she was your Helena. Kamelot was also the band that made me familiar with Epica and the Hawtness that is Simone Simons.

Oh and if you guys haven't checked it out yet, look for "Baby Metal" in YouTube. It's what happens when metal meets Japan's "Idol" culture (where pop stars are manufactured, and "graduate" after a certain number of years in the group. See AKB48 for reference)
Well, I did not necessarily say it's good. Just nice for the initial WTF factor :)

Speaking of which:

DEATH DEATH DEATH DEATH DEATH PANDA DEATH!!!!!!!!!
Currently listening to Autopsy - Acts of the Unspeakable (my favorite)

Perfect blend of dirty grind and death metal.

Haven't listened to them in ages, really hits the spot right now. I still haven't checked out their most recent efforts after their "reunion". I probably wouldn't be disappointed, but there's only so much Autopsy and Abscess I need to hear.

Recently read this book a friend got me, all about the history and evolution of 'Progressive Metal'. As it turns out, I didn't know shit about it beyond Dream Theater and Meshuggah.

So here I am listening to Mayhem, Atheist, Death, In The Woods, Enslaved, Rush, Cynic...all bands I'd never normally touch as a card-carrying melodic death/power/symphonic metal fan, but I guess that's the nature of Progressive.

Probably all a bit mainstream or wanky for most of you, but I'm enjoying the pleasant surprises.

Death and Atheist are like gods in the death metal world, definitely not wanky. The greatest part about Death was that they were one of the first death metal bands (if not the first, but that is another argument), and even as such they were progressive death metal. I always found that interesting. How can you just start death metal as progressive? Shouldn't that come later, when things get more advanced? Nope, that's why death was so great.

Well, no, but Rush especially are sort of this weird proto-metal, borderline prog-rock which I figure most metalheads would find reaaaally unpalatable. Still, that's where prog metal really came from, so I pay respect to the roots.

That book is already in my past, and in hindsight I'm glad it acknowledged the difference between Progressive and progressive. That said, progressive for Progressive's sake sometimes results in music that could be better, regardless of its pioneering ways.

I'm not a huge Rush fan myself (not because I don't like them, but because I never had much exposure to them), but if you watch interviews with various players in progressive-style metal bands (almost always with technical death metal bands), they all loved rush as kids. I'm a little too young for Rush I guess.

I'm not huge into non-death-metal prog metal, but I do love Yngwie, Symphony X (Im a guitar player, so it's not possible to dislike Michael Romeo, he's like Jesus), and some other stuff.

I agree on your last point. That draws a parallel with technical bands being technical for the sake of technicality. It never ends well. There are some bands that have overtly done that and it just ends up sounding like they missed the point of technical playing. While other bands that really understand music, theoretically, can make awesome use of technical playing (Obscura is a good example in death metal).

I don't think they really started out all that progressive, I mean Scream Bloody Gore pretty much helped invent the classic death metal sound.

Compare that with http://youtu.be/KOXLc3rmK10

Either way they were/are a classic and were instrumental to the metal we have today. RIP Chuck \m/ \m/

I agree, I didn't mean literally they started out progressive, but just as a band over time. One of the first death metal bands being progressive is in a sense obvious, but also interesting in another sense (in the sense of progressive death as a genre). They didn't start out as progressive, but by The Sound of Perserverance they were. Like, you can hear those riffs that are like straight-up foundational riffs for the style of tech death and progressive death.

But again, they were foundational for all death metal, especially classic death metal like you pointed out. RIP Chuck (RIP Vitek too).

New Gorod album is insane.

This one is kind of light, they are very progressive as far as tech death goes (in the sense that they use a ton of different sounds, and scales/sounds that you usually don't hear in tech death, kind of like Obscura in a sense):

The solo is beast in this song too, these Frenchmen rip.

The Faceless. Somewhat deathcore-ish sounds on their first album but the second album was pretty amazing.

Urkraft. Had this album years ago. Some kind of melodic death metal I guess. Not sure about the genre, not really my thing, but I always liked these guys' riffs.
