Thoughts on bits of lore, story and characters

She was my first guess, but Chris would neither confirm nor deny. This was a while ago though, back when Open Beta hit, and it's entirely possible GGG hadn't decided at that point much about Act 4.

Might be, but I get the feeling they have the story planned out much more in detail than we think. I also like the idea that in killing Dominus, we actually fought the lesser of two evils (Dialla or whoever she is being the bigger one). And just imagine it... a giant Dialla bust with really ample breasts... HC players will gape in awe till they're one-shot by the Oversoul lasers she fires from them ;-)

BTW: A few years ago, I read a German sci-fi novel with several parties fight for control of the galaxy. One party was a really strict theocracy ruled by a woman. This civilization had mastered the art of soul transfer, and in the end the current ruler turned out to have secretly "incarnated" in her successors' bodies for thousands of years.
A sword he brought, his foes to maim and rend,
from places dark behind forbidden doors,
But night by night he woke with frighten'd roars
from darkest dreams, too strange to comprehend.

Another fun fact:
- I think Oriath/Theopolis is the small island off the coast of Wraeclast, on the Act 1 map. It was probably a somewhat independent part of the Eternal Empire, basically self-sufficient. That's why the Cataclysm didn't affect them economically, and it also explains why the Oriathans know so much about Wraeclast and them gems. Charan's idea of the Order of Oriath being based on the Eternal Empire's theocracy sounds pretty good to me.

Basically you're saying "leave it to the player imagination", kinda like Dark Souls, right?

I'm cool with that, but I think GGG is going the other direction, Siosa & 2nd appearance of Fairgraves (both of them also having a look more... cartoony?) kinda shows it.

I think, for the most part, giving only clues and snippets without a lot of expository dialog works well in building an atmosphere.

It's just that when it comes to the main antagonists, giving the player a reason to care what happens would have been helpful. Grigor tells you to kill Dominus because he's Piety's boss. The fact that he exiled you only seems like it's even a motivator for half the characters. The Shadow, for instance, ought to be more interested in getting revenge from his former employers than Dominus.

I hope the PoE purists won't crucify me but I always thought after watching some artworks, like that huge tower, that PoE franchise needs a 3rd person view, open world game with a gameplay similar to Dark Souls/Sword of Darkness, hell I can already visualize my maraudeur roaming across that devastasted landscape waving his giant club at the nearest squeleton...

I don't really see it happening but if an alternate imagining were on the table, I'd prefer a first person POV. FPS FTW.
My theory - POE is just bizzaro D2 world. Count all the similarities in bosses and events. They even happen in the same order.
I read somewhere that Fidelitas and Maligaro were lovers. Fidelitas loved Maligaro so much, he allowed himself to become a guinea pig.

Which is supported by what the Scion says upon encountering him. "Fidelitas something something for love."

Not 100% on this though.

Sad story, if it's true : /

You're on to something here.

Turns out Barbarian was a Karui all along. After Koam defeated Baal he returned to his people to lead them in conquest of the coast of the Eternal Empire.

It is easy to see from the Witch's personality that she was kicked out of the school of elemental sorcery and took up necromancy.

Druid just went off and died because nobody cares about him.

Amazon cut her hair and changed literally nothing else.

Necromancer learned to hover and started hanging around with his pet dogs in Fetid Pool. Gained some weight. Killed at the request of locals out of naive superstition.

This might seem a stretch, but Paladin got bored of it and stopped being black, got a bit taller and grew a beard.

Assassin had a full sex cha-... okay, these are getting progressively weaker, I'll stop.

100% correct, and Doedre pretended very hard not to be jealous.

Glad to have that confirmed.

I should pay more attention to Lore : /

Helena: "Maligaro was mortally ill, degenerating in body and mind. It was in this state that he created the Baleful Gem. His final words are burned into my mind. 'This gem is my salvation. Today I join Fidelitas.'"

Yea, they were gay alright. Fidelitas's real name was Raulo, apparently. Not really sure what's so gross about them being gay though. The things Maligaro did and what Raulo became are far, far more disturbing than their sexuality.

I'm doing Library runs to read all the books for the no Stone Unturned achievement ATM, and there's some interesting stuff in those books. I'll just write down what I found out yesterday, feel free to comment in any way.
- The Vaal were the first to use Virtue gems, which are also referred to as Tears of the Maji.
- An otherwise inconspicuous Vaal citizen named Zerphi turned out to be an infamous serial killer. Over the 170 years of his life, he tortured and killed 13 other Vaal citizens, all gemlings, all 20 years of age. When he was finally discovered dead, he had the appearance of a 20-year-old. My theory: by torturing and mutilating the gemlings, he could somehow infuse their gems with a power that granted him not eternal, but greatly prolonged youth.
- Atziri, Queen of the Vaal and obsessed with eternal life, tasked the thaumaturgist Doryani to find out what Zerphi knew and to replicate it.
- A mysterious event only referred to as the fall killed millions of Vaal, only 3,000 or so remained and found refuge in the Azmerian empire, which then settled in the now empty Vaal empire and founded the Eternal Empire.
- My theory: If Zerphi was able to prolong his life and stay young for a very long time, maybe this happened more often? Maligaro said the Baleful Gem was his salvation, and he would join Fidelitas. Join him in what? In immortality? Maybe Maligaro stayed young forever and came back as Malachai, Or maybe even Maligaro was just a new identity for Atziri or Doryani? Maybe this person also took over Dialla in some way? That would fit well with my theory of Dialla as the Act 4 boss... ;-)
Kind of necrotopicing, but now that you mention it... Maybe that's why Dialla is eternal?

I am as always fuzzy on the timeframe, but Dialla has been alive well over two hundred years, right? Enough that clearly something happened to her that altered her. She also mentions (When you ask about Malachai) that she chose herself over the empire; that the empire died, and she lives. The death of the empire is almost certainly the Cataclysm, that withered all the gemlings into creatures of 'dessication and famishment' (Siosa).

Maybe whatever caused the cataclysm replicated the effects of Zerphi's murders, and Dialla now holds the collective life force of an empire within her, guaranteeing her eternal life.

What gets me though is: why was she able to even make that decision, of her life or the empire? Malachai was begging her, so did she manage to hijack something he had created, or was she clever enough to make something herself? After all, she's clearly learned a thing or two from watching him work, since we get the Infernal Talc from her.
