Player base decreasing means players are quitting.
You have absolutely zero proof of this. Regurgitating the same failed logic isn't proof, either.

I will keep repeating if you need me to mate, no problem :)
We know this. Unfortunately, the mods do not.

Like I said before, fanboys use steam as a player chart on release to show how popular the game was getting, but now the tables have turned it means nothing.
I said the same thing when fanboys did it. In fact, I suspected players would only use Steam for achievements. I'm surprised as many still use Steam, given it's not required like the other games which have a large concurrent population.
"
Pathetic fanboy attitude, it's okay though as denial from you guys does give me a chuckle every now and then. Thanks so much :)
I'm the fanboy but you're the one spending their free time on a PoE forum. Now that's cute. I'll remember that.
Numbers don't lie. It's only 'failed logic' because you don't agree. Oh and you kind of got the meaning of regurgitate wrong, dictionary time ;) So funny seeing people trying to use words completely out of context to feel smart :P Such a cutey.

People using the steam chart on release as a sign of popularity also gave me pause. It's pretty meaningless -- steam users will see "FREE TO PLAY" and install it. Then they'll go back to TF2, which has more hats than PoE. Whoopie.
im steam user (but not integrated poe with steam - i have ramdisc setup for 'shaderchache' folder and it plays foul with steam) and believe me or not: PEOPLE CAN READ!
if they see 'free to play' game that reads 'baubles painter simulator 2014' and they are not into christmas tree accessories production genre chances of them downloading such game are ZERO
dont expect that many football fans downloaded POE, same with racing fans or FPS fans. some 'X tycoon' fans probably did, tho
dissing steam falloff because 'EVERYBODY AND THEIR MOM' downloaded POE because it was free is.. just.. stupid. people read 'arpg', decided they are interested to see a new arpg on the market, some liked it and thm are playing even today, some decided to quit. great majority did that in less than 30 minutes (time to reach brutus in normal).
there is no bigger and better place to elevate your indie game to the next level. and surely there will be no second 'release'

Give the devs some time, I am positive we will end up with more mtx hats.
(I'm half joking, I realize MTX supports the game.)

um actually i think the fact that POE was on the front page of steam on release day makes it far different than most free to play games that are on steam

I use Steam too. I'm sorry if you were offended.

It would be. Good thing I didn't say that.

Yep.
I could have written "some Steam players will see a free-to-play game that looks at all interesting, download it, and briefly try it" instead, but subtlety is often lost on this forum, so I didn't.
When something is labelled free-to-play, the cost of giving it a quick-try is nearly zero. Consequently, far more players are going to try a free-to-play game than you should expect to stay around for a while.
The initial spike of players at release, then, isn't something to get hugely excited about, nor is the dropoff from that initial high.

Look at the other free to play games though. They started off with a slight spike, and the popular ones are growing. POE has been only losing since it was released. Another couple of months will tell the real story, maybe it will even out around 12k people or so, but if it continues to lose players, that SHOULD concern GGG. I don't get the people saying these stats mean nothing. Of course they mean something. GGG is looking at the number of people playing and judging whether or not their game is successful or not. If they're constantly losing players, I know they'll be worried.

sorry if that felt offensive, was not my intention
about this part. you live in US? or some other well-off-with-internet country? so you might not know but there are some (civilized no less) countries where 5+GB means their entire MONTHLY quote for bandwidth or 1week of downloading (if not more
i have 150mbit line and no limit so for me there are no costs to DL f2p games (and yet i have only WOT and POE) but for many and i mean many getting game this big IS an issue. so this 'lets download everything' is a local phenomenon and not general situation

I would love to see the aggregate numbers: steam + non-steam.
I would also love to see some control data: how did the number of players change over the last 4-month season?
The reason I lift an eyebrow at Steam-only statistics is that PoE open beta lasted quite a while, and players from OB may not be using the Steam version. I would expect (and would love to see data to answer this) that the kind of player PoE would attract (and keep) would have probably found the game in OB already. I can't imagine many self-described hardcore ARPG players wouldn't have heard about PoE before its Steam release.
That's not to say Steam figures aren't representative. They might be -- but they're certainly not a random sample of the player base.
PoE is also the kind of game that lends itself to binge play at the start of each new season, and then a hiatus until the next season.
So, I think there's too much noise to extract much meaning out of these Steam figures alone without putting them in the proper context (which GGG hasn't given. Maybe they should.)

Good point. I hadn't considered bandwidth caps. (Which do exist in parts of the US, depressingly.)
