More than 50 percent of steam players haven't even got past normal Brutus and just over a third have beaten Act 1 normal. They seem to just try out the game and then stop playing. This should be a bit concerning that more than half the people that try the game can't be bothered to play more than an hour or two before quitting.

Possibly some try the game on steam and then just use the non-steam client afterwards but still.

And those are the top 2 achievements completed. The other 50 achievements have an even lower completion rate.

PoE doesn't exactly shine at the beginning. Movement speed, attack and cast speed etc. I had to log with higher level characters to show my friends that all changes. Welp, they quit anyway. Some in Normal, some in Cruel.

I'm being fair, didn't even include Dota 2 of TF 2. The thing to notice is that the other f2p games are actually growing from their original numbers. the games are being updated, new content added on a regular basis (other than microtransaction pets) and have a solid, healthy community. Losing 2/3rds of a player base in less than 3 months for a f2p game doesn't bode well. People think f2p means everyone will try it and then quit, but look at the f2p games on steam that are doing well. Dota 2, TF2, War thunder, warframe, POE. Only POE is hemorrhaging players this much.

Maybe 90 percent of POE players don't use steam, maybe the numbers are unfair to POE, who knows.

Well some of those games are bought for the story, so many people beat it once and leave it. Or are any of those games MMO that are supposed to last 10 years? Stupidity and denial at it's finest.

I merely chose games that are popular and people still talk about now and regale them for being amazing. I, personally, replay games and chose those games for their popularity. Could be skewed data, most certainly, but I'll withhold judgement for about another month to see the numbers. Right now it seems like it's stabilizing but, yet again, I wanna see a bit more data. I'm a scholar, I hate making judgement on lesser data.

Oh, and please keep things cordial. Using ad hominem attacks and assuming that I'm "in denial" is ludicrous. I disagree with much of what GGG does but I won't condemn a company based on a simple graph that.

Never played a game using steam...
Don't see the point to go through a 3rd party when i can play without it...
Why do people worry about these things anyway?
If you like a game, play it
If you don't, then play something else...
The only people who should be concerned about player levels are the people who own the game...

People expect too much these days...
Back in my day we had too make do with...........ahh i wont bore you with having to spend hours typing in code to a spectrum or something to get a square ball to move around the screen.....
Been here since Open Beta.

Forgot about TF2. Let's be fair and add it in. That's the only fair thing to do in a study like this.

From what I see, PoE is stabilizing but had a huge deflation in the beginning. This game was heavily overhyped by TotalBiscuit and other gaming channels which might account for it. I'd give it another month or two and then we can really see the numbers.

several games gained players during holidays. almost two weeks with lots of hours to spare surely increases gaming population. most gamers are pupils/students so 2weeks off == more gamers.

im really curious about result in a week when everything backs to pre-holiday numbers

btw - blizzards in US with lots of schools/companies closed for more than a week now due to frost also make a difference.

That's a good point. It'll be interesting to see.

And, yeah, the weather is killing my internet here too. :P I'm finding it hard to play at times.

half of the people here dont understand how "statistics" work

if you have 30 000 people playing PoE trough steam, and over half of them already quit, that tendencie applys to the people that "dont play poe trough steam" as well, unless you can provide evidance why people that dont use steam are less likely to quit than the other 15 000 that did quit using steam...
